NEC FC Eye League Summit as Unbeaten Diehards Visit Leaders BUL FC in Njeru

NEC FC will be aiming to seize top spot in the 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League when they visit current leaders BUL FC at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Wednesday, October 21, in a crucial Matchday Seven encounter.

The highly anticipated fixture brings together two of the league’s early pace-setters, with both sides unbeaten after six matches. NEC FC, popularly known as the Diehards, head into the contest third on the table with 14 points, while BUL FC, nicknamed the Eastern Giants, lead the standings with 16 points.

With only two points separating the teams, Wednesday’s encounter presents NEC FC with an opportunity to overtake their opponents and strengthen their early-season title ambitions.

NEC FC players arrive ahead of Kickoff

The Diehards have made an impressive start to the campaign, registering four victories and two draws to collect 14 points from their opening six matches. Their latest result was a convincing 2-0 away victory over league newcomers Kigezi Homeboyz in Kamwenge.

Allan Mugalu and Marvin Oshaba scored the goals that secured maximum points for NEC FC, extending their unbeaten run and providing the team with renewed confidence ahead of the demanding trip to Njeru.

Another victory would take NEC FC to 17 points, giving them a chance to move to the top of the standings, depending on the results of other matches. More importantly, defeating the league leaders away from home would underline their credentials as genuine contenders for the league title.

However, the Diehards face a formidable opponent in BUL FC, who have enjoyed an equally impressive start to the season.

The Eastern Giants have accumulated 16 points from five wins and one draw, maintaining their unbeaten record and establishing a two-point cushion over NEC FC. They also travel into the fixture in confident mood after defeating UPDF FC 2-0 at Hamz Stadium in their previous outing on Sunday.

 BUL FC Players

Playing at their home venue, BUL FC will be determined to protect their position at the summit and widen the gap over one of their closest challengers.

The contest is therefore expected to be a closely fought battle between two sides that have demonstrated consistency, attacking quality and resilience during the opening weeks of the campaign.

NEC FC Receive Squad Boost Ahead of Njeru Trip

NEC FC have received a timely boost with the return of several players ahead of the crucial encounter.

Winger James Jarieko is available again after serving his suspension, having missed the previous match against Kigezi Homeboyz. His return offers the technical team another option in attack as the Diehards seek to trouble the hosts.

Left-back Hakim Wandera and midfielder Shamir Kimwero have also returned to the squad, providing additional depth and selection options for the coaching staff.

However, NEC FC will be without goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo, who remains sidelined through injury.

Defender Mustafa Mujuzi is also unavailable after sustaining a head injury during the previous outing in Kamwenge, while defender Warren Bbule misses the trip due to injury.

Despite the absentees, the return of Jarieko, Wandera and Kimwero gives NEC FC additional options as they prepare for one of their most significant tests of the season so far.

The technical team will now have to identify the right combination to contain BUL FC’s attacking threats while maximising NEC FC’s opportunities to secure an important away victory.

Head-to-Head Record Favours NEC FC

Historical meetings between the two sides suggest that Wednesday’s encounter could once again be a closely contested affair.

The match will be the seventh meeting between NEC FC and BUL FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. In their six previous encounters, NEC FC have registered two victories, while the other four matches ended in 1-1 draws.

The record shows that NEC FC have avoided defeat in all six previous meetings, although the four draws underline the difficulty they have faced in turning these encounters into victories.

The Diehards will be keen to build on that record and secure a third victory over the Eastern Giants, particularly with the league standings adding extra significance to the fixture.

For BUL FC, the challenge will be to defend their home advantage and finally secure a win against an opponent that has proved difficult to overcome in previous league meetings.

A Crucial Early Test in the Title Race

Although the season remains in its early stages, the importance of Wednesday’s match cannot be underestimated.

A victory for NEC FC would take their points tally to 17 and potentially lift them to the top of the table, depending on other results. It would also bring an end to BUL FC’s current advantage and send a strong message to their title rivals.

For the hosts, winning would take them to 19 points and extend their lead over NEC FC to five points, giving them an even stronger position in the early title race.

A draw, meanwhile, would preserve both teams’ unbeaten records, with BUL FC retaining their advantage at the top of the standings.

The stakes are therefore high for both clubs, with the outcome likely to influence the early shape of the league table and provide an indication of how they handle pressure against direct competitors.

NEC FC will be counting on the momentum from their victory in Kamwenge, their unbeaten run and their encouraging historical record against BUL FC to deliver a positive result in Njeru.

The Diehards' mission is clear: maintain their unbeaten start, close the gap on the leaders and turn a challenging away fixture into an opportunity to climb to the summit.
