National Boda Boda Stage Development Model Launched to Empower Riders for Growth

Kampala, January 21, 2023 — The United Boda Boda Riders' Cooperative Union has unveiled an ambitious initiative to transform the lives of Uganda’s Boda Boda riders. The National Boda Boda Stage Development Model, launched at the Kampala Serena Hotel under the theme, “Empowering Boda Boda Riders for Growth,” seeks to create opportunities for socio-economic empowerment, improved livelihoods, and sustainable development among Boda Boda riders nationwide.

Addressing the launch, Amon Mulyowa, a representative of the United Boda Boda Riders' Cooperative Union, explained that the model’s foundation is rooted in addressing poverty at the grassroots. By focusing on the needs of Boda Boda riders at their respective operational stages, the initiative aims to provide practical solutions to challenges that hinder their growth.

“The logic behind this model is simple: if we want to develop and empower someone to get out of poverty, we must start where they operate. This model will empower riders to achieve economic independence while addressing their health, environmental, and financial needs,” Mulyowa stated.

The development model features several innovative products designed to uplift the Boda Boda community:

Union App for Financial Welfare

The union launched a mobile application that is safe, reliable, and affordable. Riders will remit UGX 5,000 weekly through the app, contributing to a welfare fund aimed at providing a financial safety net for riders. The app, accessible on smartphones, ensures transparency and accountability while fostering financial discipline. Stage-Owned Boda Boda Bikes

Under this initiative, every Boda Boda stage is required to contribute UGX 70,000. The funds will be pooled to purchase motorcycles that will be collectively owned by the stages. Each bike will be awarded to the best-performing rider, and its proceeds will fund stage development. With over 100,000 stages in the country, this initiative has the potential to raise UGX 70 billion for investing in new motorcycles.

“These bikes will not only support individual riders but also create opportunities for entire stages to grow and invest in their futures,” Mulyowa explained.

Economic Empowerment SACCO

To enhance economic stability, riders are encouraged to contribute UGX 1,000 daily to a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO). Of this amount, UGX 620 will be paid to the government as tax, while UGX 380 will be retained by the SACCO for investment. With 100,000 stages participating, this initiative can generate UGX 38 million daily, enabling riders to finance their operations without relying on high-interest loans from banks.

Health Awareness Program

The health initiative focuses on educating riders about personal well-being and customer safety. The program aims to reduce health-related risks and improve the quality of services provided by Boda Boda riders, ultimately fostering a healthier and more productive workforce.

'Another Life’ Music Project

In a bid to encourage creativity and additional income streams, the union introduced the ‘Another Life’ project. Riders are encouraged to record songs, which will be produced by renowned music producer Washington. These songs will be marketed as a source of revenue, offering riders an opportunity to earn extra income and explore their artistic talents.

“There is life beyond Boda Boda. This project will give riders a chance to become music stars while earning extra income for themselves and their families,” Mulyowa remarked.

Union Day Football Tournament

Later this year, the union will host a football tournament to celebrate Union Day. The tournament will bring together riders from six regions across Uganda, with a total of UGX 375 million in cash prizes up for grabs. The prize breakdown includes:

Winner: UGX 100 million

2nd Place: UGX 75 million

3rd Place: UGX 50 million

4th Place: UGX 35 million

5th Place: UGX 20 million

6th Place: UGX 10 million

The tournament aims to promote teamwork, camaraderie, and physical fitness within the Boda Boda community.

The National Boda Boda Stage Development Model is a bold step toward empowering one of Uganda’s most vibrant but underappreciated sectors. By addressing challenges such as poverty, health risks, and lack of economic stability, the initiative seeks to transform Boda Boda riders into key contributors to Uganda’s economy.

Mulyowa concluded his address by urging riders to embrace the program and take charge of their futures. “This model is about giving you the tools and opportunities to grow. Together, we can build a sustainable and prosperous future for every Boda Boda rider in Uganda,” he said.

With its comprehensive approach to economic empowerment, health awareness, and community development, the National Boda Boda Stage Development Model is poised to create a significant impact on the lives of Uganda’s riders. The initiative underscores the potential of grassroots-driven solutions in achieving national development goals while empowering individuals to build better futures for themselves and their communities.
