NRM Secretary General Todwong Leads Village Baraza Launch in Gulu City

GULU CITY, UGANDA — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has officially launched the nationwide Village Barazas ahead of the forthcoming Village Women Council and Local Council I (LC I) Chairperson elections. The launch took place at Lajwa Tek Cell in Pageya Ward, Gulu City, where Todwong engaged grassroots leaders, party supporters and community members as the NRM intensified its mobilisation efforts ahead of the village-level elections.

The Village Barazas are part of the NRM's nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign aimed at strengthening the party's structures at the village level and rallying support for its flag bearers in the upcoming Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections.

Addressing residents and party supporters, Todwong underscored the importance of grassroots leadership in advancing effective governance, accountability and service delivery. He urged voters to carefully consider candidates who can effectively represent their interests and contribute to the development of their communities.

He called on NRM supporters to remain united and mobilise voters to participate in the electoral process, stressing that strong grassroots leadership is critical to the success of government programmes and the delivery of services to ordinary citizens.

Todwong also reflected on the historical evolution of Uganda's Local Council system, tracing its roots to the Resistance Councils established as a mechanism for promoting people's participation in governance.

He noted that the Local Council system has over the years remained an important platform for grassroots participation, community mobilisation, accountability and people-centred governance.

According to Todwong, the village remains the foundation of Uganda's governance structure, making the election of competent and committed leaders at this level essential for ensuring that communities effectively engage with government programmes and development initiatives.

The NRM Secretary General's engagement in Gulu marks the beginning of a broader nationwide mobilisation drive, with senior party leaders and coordinators deployed across different regions to oversee Village Barazas and strengthen grassroots structures.

The mobilisation campaign comes at a critical time as the country prepares for the Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections. The NRM has continued to encourage its supporters to maintain unity, discipline and commitment to the party as they mobilise behind its flag bearers.

The Village Barazas are expected to provide a platform for direct interaction between party leaders, candidates and grassroots communities, enabling leaders to communicate the NRM's priorities while also listening to concerns and aspirations from citizens at the village level.

The NRM leadership has maintained that effective grassroots mobilisation is central to consolidating the party's structures and ensuring that its programmes and policies are understood and embraced by communities across the country.

The launch in Gulu City therefore signals the start of an intensified final mobilisation phase as the party seeks to consolidate support for its candidates in the forthcoming village-level elections.

The NRM has urged its members and supporters to actively participate in the electoral process and to support candidates who, according to the party, are committed to accountability, unity, service delivery and the transformation of communities.
