Tragic Death of Nigerian Footballer Abubakar Lawal Under Investigation

Kajjansi Police Division has launched an investigation into the tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, a professional player for Vipers Sports Club, who allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on the morning of February 24, 2025.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, preliminary findings indicate that Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle, registration number UBQ 695G, with the intention of meeting his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national who had been residing in room 416 since February 20, 2025.

Naima stated that after Lawal arrived, she left him in the room preparing tea and proceeded to a game center within the shopping arcade. However, shortly after, at approximately 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony under unclear circumstances. He was immediately rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Authorities have since recovered several of Lawal’s personal belongings from his black backpack, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers. As part of their ongoing investigation, the police are reviewing CCTV footage from the shopping mall and conducting detailed interrogations to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to his tragic fall.

Owoyesigyire emphasized that the police are committed to carrying out a thorough investigation to determine whether foul play was involved or if the incident was an unfortunate accident. The public has been urged to remain patient as authorities piece together the evidence to establish the truth.

The sudden death of Abubakar Lawal has sent shockwaves across the Ugandan football community, particularly among his teammates and fans at Vipers Sports Club, where he was regarded as a key player.
