Ugandan Journalists to Hold Thanksgiving & Dedication Service Amid Rising Election-Period Threats

Ahead of Uganda’s election season, journalists from across the country will gather for a Thanksgiving & Dedication Service to seek divine protection and guidance in their line of duty.

The event is scheduled for March 1, 2025, at 9 AM at KCCA Gardens, City Hall and is organized by New Vision journalist Robinah Nantale.

Under the theme "Upon Deployments: Seeking God's Safety in Election Season" (Psalms 16:1), the service aims to bring media professionals together to pray for safety, wisdom, and resilience as they prepare to cover one of the country’s most tense and high-stakes election cycles.

This event comes at a time when Ugandan journalists continue to face brutality and harassment at the hands of security agencies, particularly during election periods.

Over the years, numerous reporters have been beaten, arrested, had their equipment destroyed, or been blocked from covering key political events.

The 2021 elections saw some of the worst violations against press freedom, with journalists covering opposition campaigns often targeted with excessive force.

The dedication service will serve as a reminder of the crucial role journalists play in democracy and as a call for their protection while in the field. With the hashtag #MediaElectionPrayer, the event is expected to generate online discussion on press freedom, security, and the need for responsible journalism in Uganda’s electoral process.

All journalists are invited to attend. For more information, contact 0700969409.
