West Nile NRM Leaders Urged to Strengthen Grassroots Mobilisation for LC I Polls

ARUA CITY: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has intensified its mobilisation efforts in the West Nile sub-region ahead of the forthcoming Women Council and Local Council I (LC I) elections, with senior party leaders calling for unity, discipline and sustained grassroots engagement.

The NRM regional entry meeting held at Eripak Resort Beach in Arua City attracted a huge turnout of party leaders and stakeholders from across West Nile, as the party moved to harmonise strategies and strengthen its structures ahead of the grassroots elections.

The meeting was attended by the NRM Director of Finance, Hajjati Medina Naham, who led a delegation of senior party officials including Hon. Jachan Omach, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, and Zaituni Driwaru, an NRM Electoral Commission Commissioner.

Addressing party leaders, Hajjati Medina applauded the West Nile region for its strong support and commitment to the NRM during the recently concluded general elections, describing the mobilisation efforts as a demonstration of loyalty and confidence in the party’s leadership.

She commended the region for rallying behind President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and NRM candidates, urging leaders to maintain the same energy and commitment as the party prepares for the village-level elections.

“Your mobilisation efforts and commitment during the general elections demonstrated the strength of the NRM structures in West Nile. The same spirit must continue as we focus on the Women Council and LC I elections,” Hajjati Medina told the leaders.

She emphasised the importance of grassroots structures in delivering services, strengthening party coordination and ensuring that communities remain connected with the leadership.

Hon. Jachan Omach urged NRM leaders in West Nile to preserve the unity and teamwork that contributed to the party’s success in the general elections. He noted that the LC I elections present an opportunity to consolidate the party’s presence at the village level.

He described LC I chairpersons as a critical foundation of Uganda’s local governance system and the NRM’s grassroots network, saying effective village leadership plays a key role in mobilising communities, promoting development and addressing citizens’ concerns.

“LC I leaders are the closest leaders to the people. They are the foundation upon which our grassroots structures are built. We must therefore ensure that we elect leaders who understand the needs of the people and are committed to serving their communities,” Omach said.

Meanwhile, NRM Electoral Commission Commissioner Zaituni Driwaru called on party leaders to uphold honesty, discipline and teamwork throughout the election process.

She warned against practices that could weaken the party’s structures, particularly the sponsorship of independent candidates against official NRM flag bearers.

Zaituni encouraged leaders to respect party decisions and work together to ensure that the NRM maintains its strength and unity at all levels.

She said internal divisions and indiscipline could undermine the party’s achievements, urging members to prioritise collective interests over individual ambitions.

The West Nile regional entry meeting is part of a nationwide mobilisation drive by the NRM leadership aimed at preparing party structures for the upcoming Local Council I and Women Council elections.

The party has been engaging regional leaders, Members of Parliament, district chairpersons, flag bearers and other stakeholders to coordinate mobilisation strategies and ensure effective participation in the grassroots electoral process.
