President Museveni Concludes Kigezi Subregion Campaign Trail with a Major Rally in Rukungiri

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Wednesday concluded his Kigezi Subregion campaign trail with a highly attended rally in Rukungiri District, delivering a message focused on peace, historical stability, and wealth creation as the core pillars of Uganda’s progress. The rally marked the final stop in a series of engagements across the region before the President shifts his campaign activities to the next subregion.

Addressing thousands of residents, President Museveni urged the people of Rukungiri to remain firm in their support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), describing the party as a “tested force” that has guided Uganda through some of its most challenging periods. He reminded the crowd that areas like Kanungu, Kihihi, and other communities bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo endured insecurity for years before the NRM restored peace.

“Whenever you are asked why you support the NRM, tell them it is a tested force that has walked Uganda through every challenge and delivered stability,” he said. “Those near the Congo border know what it means to live without peace. The NRM brought peace, and it is on that foundation that we continue building Uganda’s future.”

The President emphasized that peace remains the cornerstone of socio-economic transformation. Without it, he argued, all other development efforts—including agriculture, industry, tourism, and education—cannot flourish.

A major highlight of Museveni’s message was his commitment to expanding irrigation infrastructure across the hilly Kigezi region. He praised the Bakiga for their resilience and willingness to adopt productivity-enhancing technologies.

“I am happy the Bakiga have shown determination,” Museveni said. “I am going to ensure that we bring irrigation systems that can lift water up the hills so that farmers can produce all year round and defeat poverty permanently.”

He explained that the government’s new direction is anchored in transitioning farmers from rain-dependent agriculture to reliable, all-season production. The expansion of hillside irrigation systems will support households growing high-value crops such as Irish potatoes, vegetables, tea, fruits, and other commercial produce.

The President reiterated that modern agriculture is a central pillar of the NRM’s wealth-creation agenda and encouraged families to embrace enterprises that can generate consistent income.

The Rukungiri rally symbolically closed Museveni’s campaign journey through the Kigezi Subregion, where he engaged residents of Kabale, Kisoro, Kanungu, Rubanda, Rukiga, and Rukungiri on the NRM’s achievements and future plans.

As he prepares to embark on his next subregional tour, the President reaffirmed his commitment to meeting citizens at community level to directly address their concerns, mobilize them for wealth creation, and consolidate political support ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

Across Kigezi, Museveni’s central themes remained clear and consistent:

Peace as the engine of development

Household-level wealth creation through commercial agriculture

Infrastructure expansion, especially irrigation and rural transformation

The Rukungiri gathering served not only as a political rally but also as a strategic moment for the President to highlight achievements while promising new interventions tailored to the region’s terrain and economic potential.

With the Kigezi campaign chapter closed, the national political spotlight now shifts to the next subregion on Museveni’s itinerary, where similar conversations around peace, prosperity, and transformation are expected to take center stage.
