Todwong Urges Kabale University Students to Build Ideological Clarity and Reject Political Opportunism
Speaking during an evening interaction on campus, Todwong described young people as “valuable raw materials” with the potential to shape Uganda’s future as leaders, professionals, and innovators—but only if they anchor themselves in knowledge and solid ideological grounding.
Kabale — National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong has called on students at Kabale University to cultivate ideological depth, discipline, and informed political engagement, warning them against being misled by opportunistic individuals who prey on youthful enthusiasm.
Speaking during an evening interaction on campus, Todwong described young people as “valuable raw materials” with the potential to shape Uganda’s future as leaders, professionals, and innovators—but only if they anchor themselves in knowledge and solid ideological grounding.
“Do Not Be an NRM Supporter Simply Because of a Yellow T-Shirt”
In his address, Todwong cautioned students against supporting political causes merely for excitement or public approval. He noted that many young people fall into the trap of symbolism without substance—such as wearing party colours without understanding the policies, principles, or historical context that those colours represent.
“There is a difference between being biologically young and ideologically young,” he said. “Do not be an NRM supporter simply because you have a yellow T-shirt. Be a supporter with content—someone who understands what they stand for.”
He stressed that university students are expected by society to be informed, analytical, and transformative. Todwong challenged learners to familiarize themselves with local, national, and institutional issues.
“A villager should be able to ask you about Kabale University and trust that you know what you’re talking about,” he remarked.
Warning Against Political Opportunists
The NRM SG urged students to remain alert to what he termed “political opportunists”—individuals who promise quick fixes, exploit frustrations, or distort information to gain support.
He argued that such actors take advantage of the youth by appealing to excitement rather than offering serious solutions.
“Opportunists will tell you what you want to hear,” Todwong warned. “But true leaders focus on long-term transformation.”
He encouraged students to examine competing political ideas critically, evaluate facts rather than rhetoric, and avoid being swayed by “noise and excitement.” According to him, Uganda’s challenges require informed, committed leadership—not reactionary voices seeking popularity.
Reflecting on Uganda’s Historical Journey
Todwong walked students through Uganda’s historical political landscape before and after independence, highlighting the NRM government’s contributions to national stability, peace, and population growth.
He argued that the gains achieved over the years must be safeguarded by an informed generation that understands the nation’s trajectory. He urged students to appreciate the progress made in governance, security, education, and social services—while also preparing themselves to contribute solutions to the remaining challenges.
Leadership Rooted in Character and Discipline
Throughout his lecture, Todwong emphasized that leadership is not a pursuit of quick fame but a calling anchored in integrity, reliability, and service.
He encouraged students to seek mentors who can guide them morally and intellectually, stressing the importance of internal discipline, personal responsibility, and a strong work ethic.
“Prepare for a competitive world,” he told the students, adding that employers today prioritize adaptability, attitude, and character over degree grades alone.
A Call to Stay Focused and Ideologically Firm
Todwong concluded by urging Kabale University students to stay focused on their academic journey, cultivate a strong ideological foundation, and resist influences that undermine their potential.
He reminded them that the country’s future rests on a generation that is knowledgeable, principled, and committed to meaningful transformation.
