Kampala University Annual Iftar Celebrates Faith, Community, and Prof. Kateregga’s Legacy
The annual gathering, which has become a cherished tradition at the university, offered an opportunity for Muslims and invited guests to break the fast together while strengthening bonds of community, gratitude, and spiritual reflection.
The Vice Chancellor of Kampala University (Original), Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru D. Kateregga, hosted the institution’s Annual Iftar Dinner and Du’a prayers on March 6, 2026, at the university’s Ggaba Main Campus, bringing together religious leaders, political figures, alumni, and members of the community for an evening of prayer, reflection, and unity during the holy month of Ramadan.
The annual gathering, which has become a cherished tradition at the university, offered an opportunity for Muslims and invited guests to break the fast together while strengthening bonds of community, gratitude, and spiritual reflection.
Speaking as the chief guest and host, Prof. Kateregga emphasized that the event is organized every year as a moment of prayer, remembrance, and togetherness. He noted that the Iftar and Du’a prayers also serve as a tribute to members of his family and a way of giving thanks while bringing the wider community together during the sacred month.
"This gathering is about reflection, gratitude, and unity. It is a time to pray for our families, our institution, and our nation, while also sharing the blessings of Ramadan with the community,” Prof. Kateregga said.
The well-attended event attracted several prominent dignitaries, including the Deputy Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, Owek. Ahmed Lwasa, who joined guests in prayers and the breaking of the fast.
Notably, Members of Parliament-elect for Uganda’s upcoming 12th Parliament were also present. Eleven of the incoming legislators are alumni of Kampala University, reflecting the institution’s growing influence in shaping national leadership. Among them, seven studied at the Jinja Campus, two at the Ggaba Main Campus, and two at the Masaka Campus.
The evening also drew a diverse audience of political leaders, business figures, religious leaders, and district Kadhis from Butambala and Wakiso districts, highlighting the university’s strong ties with both national and community leadership.
During the prayers, Sheikh Elias Kigozi, a respected Islamic leader who serves as the District Khadhi of Wakiso, commended Prof. Kateregga for his contributions to education and national development. He noted that the sacrifices the Vice Chancellor has made in establishing and nurturing institutions of learning have had a lasting impact on many lives.
Sheikh Kigozi offered prayers for Prof. Kateregga, asking Allah to reward his efforts, grant him good health, and bless him with a long life so he can continue serving the nation through education and community development.
The gathering was marked by spiritual reflections, heartfelt prayers, and moments of entertainment that created a warm and celebratory atmosphere. Guests shared meals and conversations after breaking the fast, reinforcing the spirit of unity and compassion that characterizes Ramadan.
Kampala University leaders noted that such events help strengthen the institution’s relationship with the broader community while promoting values of faith, service, and social cohesion.
Established as a private, chartered, recognized, and accredited institution in Uganda, Kampala University continues to expand its academic footprint across the country. The university operates several campuses, including the Ggaba Main Campus, Mutundwe, Masaka, Jinja, and Luwero, serving thousands of students in diverse academic programs.
The annual Iftar dinner has become one of the university’s most significant community engagements, bringing together alumni, leaders, scholars, and residents in a shared moment of spiritual reflection during Ramadan.
As the evening concluded, prayers were offered for peace, unity, and prosperity for Uganda, while guests praised the university leadership for sustaining a tradition that blends faith, education, and community fellowship.
