Vipers SC Crowned FUFA Super Cup Champions After Defeating Kitara FC 3-1

Vipers SC were crowned the 2026 FUFA Super Cup champions after defeating Kitara FC 3-1 in an entertaining final played at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Saturday evening.

The victory underlined Vipers’ status as Uganda’s defending league champions, as they produced a composed and determined performance to overcome a resilient Kitara side and lift the season-opening trophy.

The match, which brought together the champions of Uganda’s top domestic competitions, provided an early test of the two clubs’ readiness ahead of the new campaign and their respective continental assignments.

Vipers started brightly and thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Farouk Miya found the back of the net. However, the goal was ruled out after Karim Watambala was adjudged to have been in an offside position during the build-up.

Kitara were given another scare seven minutes later when Vipers came close to conceding an unfortunate own goal. Joel Sserujongi’s attempted clearance nearly ended up in his own net, but Ashraf Mandela reacted quickly to produce a crucial goal-line clearance and keep his team in the contest.

Vipers continued to apply pressure, with Princewill Tarabina going close in the 22nd minute. The forward rose highest to meet a well-delivered ball from Miya, but his header narrowly missed the target, shaving the top of the crossbar.

The pressure eventually paid off in the 32nd minute when Odili Chukwuma broke the deadlock.

Chukwuma rose to meet a well-weighted delivery from Gusto Mulongo and headed the ball beyond the Kitara goalkeeper to give Vipers a 1-0 advantage.

Kitara went into the half-time break trailing by a goal but returned for the second half with renewed purpose.

Their persistence was rewarded around the hour mark when Martin Kizza brought the game level. Kizza capitalised on a defensive lapse after Vipers failed to properly clear the ball from close range, giving Kitara renewed hope of turning the contest around.

However, Vipers responded almost immediately and regained control of the match.

In the 68th minute, Karim Watambala restored Vipers’ advantage with a composed tap-in after receiving a pinpoint pass from Marvin Youngman.

The goal shifted the momentum firmly back in Vipers’ favour, and the league champions continued to exploit spaces as Kitara pushed forward in search of another equaliser.

Vipers eventually put the contest beyond doubt in the 78th minute.

Gusto Mulongo capped an impressive individual performance by scoring his side’s third goal, powering a header into the net from another excellent Farouk Miya delivery.

The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 victory for Vipers and secured another piece of silverware for the club.

The triumph also provides Vipers with an early boost as they prepare for the challenges ahead, particularly their campaign on the continental stage.

For Kitara, the defeat will offer valuable lessons ahead of their own continental commitments. Despite the setback, the side demonstrated enough quality and resilience to suggest they will remain competitive during the new season.

The Super Cup final therefore served as more than just a battle for domestic honours. It was also an important measuring stick for two Ugandan clubs preparing to carry the country’s flag beyond its borders.

Vipers’ attacking efficiency, defensive resilience and ability to respond quickly after conceding ultimately proved decisive.

With Chukwuma opening the scoring, Watambala restoring the lead and Mulongo completing the victory, Vipers produced the clinical finishing required to overcome Kitara and begin the new season with silverware.

The 3-1 victory at Nakivubo will give the champions considerable confidence as they turn their attention to the demanding domestic and continental fixtures ahead.

For Ugandan football, the encounter also offered an encouraging glimpse of the quality and competitiveness expected from the two clubs as they prepare to represent the country on the continent.
