PELUM Uganda Marks 30 Years with Agroecology Week of Action 2025
Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Uganda has officially launched the Agroecology Week of Action (AWA) 2025, a weeklong series of events aimed at promoting sustainable food systems and advancing agroecological practices across the country.
The announcement was made at Hotel Africana, Kampala, as the organization also celebrated 30 years of impact in supporting community led land-use management initiatives.
Speaking at the launch, PELUM Uganda Country Coordinator Luyimbazi Josephine outlined the key activities scheduled for the week, highlighting the role of agroecology in building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems.
Board Chairman Mr. Kyeswa Christopher also addressed attendees, noting the organization’s three decade journey in championing environmentally and socially responsible farming practices.
The Agroecology Week of Action 2025 will bring together an estimated 1,500 stakeholders, including small-scale farmers, indigenous knowledge holders, government officials, private sector actors, researchers, civil society, financial institutions, and the media.
The week will focus on scaling up agroecological innovations, strengthening market systems, aligning policies, and building partnerships to ensure sustainable and resilient food systems in Uganda.
The theme for this year is, “Championing Agroecological Innovations and Approaches for Sustainable Food Systems.”
“Agroecology as a holistic approach integrates ecological and social principles in the design and management of sustainable agriculture and food systems,” said a PELUM Uganda, board chairman. “This week provides a critical platform to mobilize actors, exchange knowledge, and demonstrate the interconnected nature of our food systems.”
The week kicked off with a press conference to introduce the Agroecology Week of Action to stakeholders and the wider public.
The National Agroecology Actors’ Symposium brings together stakeholders to discuss accelerating agroecology transitions through dialogue on policy, markets, finance, and practices for transformative change.
The Agroecological Market Systems Expo (AMASE) showcases youth- and women-led agroecological innovations, entrepreneurship opportunities, and market development for sustainable agri-business.
The Indigenous and Traditional Food & Seed Fair celebrates Uganda’s indigenous foods and cultural diversity through exhibitions, food tastings, cooking demonstrations, and awards for exemplary participants.
The 30th Anniversary Celebration marks PELUM Uganda’s three decades of promoting agroecology and sustainable land use practices nationwide.
PELUM Uganda invites farmers, private sector actors, researchers, government institutions, development partners, media, and the public to participate in the Agroecology Week of Action 2025.
The events provide a unique opportunity to showcase innovations, strengthen market linkages, exchange knowledge, and foster partnerships that advance resilient food systems in Uganda.
