UBOS TRAINS 80 DATA COLLECTORS AHEAD OF 9TH ROUND OF NATIONAL HOUSEHOLD SURVEY
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has begun a 15 day training programme for 80 data collectors at Kabira Country Club, in preparation for the 9th Round of the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) 2026/27.
While officially opening the training, the Executive Director of UBOS, Dr Chris N. Mukiza, congratulated the trainees on successfully completing a rigorous interview and selection process aimed at ensuring quality throughout the statistical production chain.
Dr Mukiza urged the trainees to take the training seriously, noting that it is critical to equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for effective data collection. He emphasised the importance of understanding not only the survey questionnaire but also the purpose and significance of the information being gathered.
He cautioned the trainees against poor performance, noting that those who fail to meet the required standards risk being blacklisted from participating in future surveys. Underscoring the importance of quality statistics, Dr Mukiza stressed that the production of reliable statistics begins with accurate and credible data collection.
"If you do not do a good job during data collection, then you have deviated from the main purpose of this survey," Dr Mukiza said.
The training will be followed by a field testing exercise to assess the effectiveness of the survey tools and procedures, and to ensure that data collectors are adequately prepared for the main fieldwork.
The Uganda National Household Survey collects data on key socio-economic areas, including education, health, housing and housing conditions, and food security. It provides vital statistical information for assessing poverty levels, monitoring socio-economic trends, and evaluating household welfare in line with national and international development frameworks.
UBOS published the report of the 8th Round of the UNHS in May 2025. The 9th Round, covering 2026/27, will build on previous survey rounds by providing updated and reliable statistical information to support evidence-based planning, policy formulation, monitoring, evaluation and informed decision-making.
