Hon. Orone Derrick Launches Gogonyo Examination Bureau to Improve Academic Performance and Fight Illiteracy

PALLISA, Uganda – July 2, 2026:

Member of Parliament for Gogonyo County, Hon. Orone Derrick, has unveiled an ambitious education initiative aimed at transforming learning outcomes in the constituency through the establishment of the Gogonyo Examination Bureau, a locally driven academic support institution designed to improve learners' performance and reduce illiteracy.

The initiative, which is fully funded by Hon. Orone Derrick, reflects his commitment to strengthening the education sector by providing structured academic interventions that complement government efforts to improve the quality of education in Uganda.

Launched under the theme "Every Child Deserves the Chance to Learn," the Bureau will operate with the guiding motto "Education Today, A Better Gogonyo Tomorrow," emphasizing the belief that investment in education is the cornerstone of long-term social and economic transformation.

The establishment of the Bureau comes at a time when many rural communities continue to grapple with challenges such as low literacy levels, inconsistent academic performance, learner absenteeism, and school dropout rates. Through this initiative, Hon. Orone seeks to address these challenges by creating a coordinated system of learner assessment, academic monitoring, and targeted support for schools across Gogonyo County.

Raising Academic Standards

According to the MP, the Gogonyo Examination Bureau has been established to provide a structured mechanism for improving education standards through continuous assessment, performance analysis, and collaboration with schools.

The Bureau will work closely with head teachers, classroom teachers, education officers, and school management committees to identify learning gaps and develop interventions that improve teaching and learning.

One of its principal objectives is to enhance academic performance by introducing standardized assessments, providing remedial support for struggling learners, and promoting data-driven instructional strategies that enable teachers to make informed decisions based on learners' performance.

Rather than focusing solely on end-of-year examinations, the Bureau intends to promote continuous learning assessment, ensuring that weaknesses are identified and addressed before they become major barriers to academic success.

Tackling Illiteracy

The initiative also places significant emphasis on combating illiteracy, which remains a major obstacle to development in many rural communities.

Through targeted literacy programmes, the Bureau aims to ensure that every learner acquires essential reading and writing skills during the early years of education.

Officials behind the initiative believe that literacy forms the foundation upon which all other learning is built, making early intervention critical for improving educational outcomes.

By supporting schools with literacy-focused assessments and instructional strategies, the Bureau hopes to increase the number of learners who attain proficiency in reading comprehension, writing, and communication.

Promoting School Attendance and Retention

Another major focus of the Bureau will be improving learner retention.

Recognizing that many children discontinue their education due to socio-economic challenges and poor academic performance, the Bureau intends to monitor attendance patterns and work alongside schools to identify learners who may be at risk of dropping out.

Through community engagement and academic support programmes, the initiative seeks to increase school attendance while reducing learner attrition across Gogonyo County.

Education stakeholders believe that sustained school attendance not only improves examination performance but also contributes to better life opportunities for children.

Preparing Learners for the Future

Beyond improving examination results, the Bureau aims to prepare learners for future academic and vocational opportunities.

By strengthening foundational competencies, the programme seeks to equip learners with skills necessary for higher education, technical training, entrepreneurship, and employment.

The initiative aligns with Uganda's broader human capital development agenda, which emphasizes quality education as a driver of economic growth and national development.

Expected Impact

The Gogonyo Examination Bureau has identified four key outcomes it intends to achieve over time:

Improved reading and writing proficiency among learners.

Higher school attendance across Gogonyo County.

Reduced school dropout rates. Better preparation of learners for future academic and career opportunities.

These outcomes are expected to contribute to sustained improvements in educational performance while creating a stronger foundation for community development.

Hon. Orone Derrick Speaks

Speaking about the initiative, Hon. Orone Derrick described the Bureau as an investment in the future of Gogonyo County.

"This Bureau is a commitment to our children and to the future of Gogonyo. We cannot build a progressive constituency on a foundation of illiteracy. By investing in structured academic support today, we are securing a more educated, capable, and empowered generation for tomorrow," he said.

He emphasized that education remains one of the most powerful tools for fighting poverty and creating opportunities for young people, noting that every child deserves access to quality learning regardless of their background.

Collaboration with Education Stakeholders

The Bureau is expected to commence operations in the coming weeks.

Its rollout will involve consultations and engagements with head teachers, district education officials, school management committees, parents, and other education stakeholders to ensure coordinated implementation across schools within Gogonyo County.

The collaborative approach is intended to foster shared responsibility in improving education standards while ensuring that interventions respond to the unique needs of individual schools.

A New Chapter for Education in Gogonyo

The launch of the Gogonyo Examination Bureau represents one of the most significant constituency-led education initiatives in the area, demonstrating how local leadership can complement national education programmes through targeted investment and innovation.

By focusing on literacy, continuous assessment, learner retention, and academic excellence, Hon. Orone Derrick's initiative seeks to build a stronger education system capable of producing knowledgeable, skilled, and productive citizens.

As preparations begin for the Bureau's operational rollout, education stakeholders and residents alike will be watching closely to see how the initiative contributes to improved academic performance and a brighter future for the children of Gogonyo County.
