Kampala – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has intensified preparations for the forthcoming Women Council and Local Council elections, with the party leadership convening a strategic meeting aimed at strengthening coordination among its grassroots women's structures.
The meeting, held at the NRM party headquarters on Plot 10, Kyadondo Road in Kampala, was chaired by the NRM National Treasurer, Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo,
alongside the party's Director of Mobilisation, Dr. Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde.
It brought together executive committee members of the NRM Women League and the National Women Council in a bid to harmonise their efforts and develop a unified roadmap ahead of the nationwide electoral exercises.
According to the party leadership, the engagement was convened to foster closer collaboration between the two bodies, which play a pivotal role in mobilising women and strengthening the party's grassroots structures across the country.
The discussions focused on preparations for the election of Women Council leaders from the village level through to the national level, as well as the upcoming elections for Local Council I (LC I) and Local Council II (LC II) chairpersons.
The leaders underscored the importance of unity, discipline and effective coordination to ensure that the electoral process is conducted peacefully and transparently while encouraging broad participation by women in leadership and governance.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for members of the NRM Women League and the National Women Council to align their mobilisation strategies, clarify their respective responsibilities, and identify areas where joint action will be required during the election period.
Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa emphasised the need for the two structures to work together in advancing the party's agenda at the grassroots, noting that cohesive leadership is essential in mobilising communities and strengthening support for the NRM across the country.
Dr. Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde highlighted the critical role of mobilisation in ensuring successful elections, urging leaders to remain active within their communities, educate voters on the electoral process, and promote peaceful participation throughout the exercise.
The harmonisation meeting forms part of the NRM's broader efforts to consolidate its grassroots structures ahead of several important electoral activities. Women Councils serve as a key platform for promoting women's participation in decision-making and community development, while Local Council leadership remains central to governance, service delivery and community mobilisation at the village and parish levels.
According to the electoral roadmap issued by the National Electoral Commission, elections for Women Councils are scheduled to take place later this month in July, with the election of LC I and LC II chairpersons expected to follow in early August.
As preparations gather momentum, the NRM leadership has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that its structures remain organised, united and fully prepared to participate effectively in the forthcoming elections, which are expected to shape grassroots leadership across Uganda for the coming term.
