Uganda Parliament Passes Anti homosexuality Bill

KAMPALA - The Parliament of the republic of Uganda through the speaker, Rt. Hon, Anita Among has passed the anti homosexuality bill.

The Bill has been presented for the second and third reading by the Bugiri Municipality legislator, Mr. Asuman Basalirwa on Tuesday in parliament.

According to the bill, it seeks to prohibit same-sex sexual relations, strengthen Uganda’s capacity to deal with domestic and foreign threats to the heterosexual family, safeguard traditional and cultural values and protect youth and children against gay and lesbian practice through imposing penalties on the perpetrators.

Today, during the debate, the woman member of parliament Tororo District and the minister for mineral development, Hon Sarah Opendi, strongly proposed for castration of the homosexuals as a penalty once found guilty by courts of law.

"Let us castrate all those men found guilty of any homosexual acts, as the only way Uganda can fight against homosexuality," she said.

In the same bill however, offences of homosexuality and attempted or aggravated homosexuality will attract a maximum of 10-year jail term while any entity promoting the vice shall pay a fine of Uganda Shillings 100 million among others.
