Electoral Commission Set to Unveil Roadmap for Ajumani West MP By-Election

The Electoral Commission (EC) is today expected to unveil the official roadmap for the by-election to fill the vacant parliamentary seat for Ajumani West Constituency following the death of the area's Member of Parliament, Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, who passed away on July 18, 2026.

The roadmap will be presented during a stakeholders' meeting convened by the Commission at the Ajumani District Headquarters. The meeting will bring together political leaders, aspiring candidates, security agencies, district officials, civil society organizations, the media and other key stakeholders to discuss preparations for the by-election and build consensus on the electoral process.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the Commission had moved swiftly to organize the by-election in accordance with the Constitution and Uganda's electoral laws.

Mucunguzi explained that the law requires the Clerk to Parliament to formally notify the Electoral Commission whenever a parliamentary seat falls vacant. Upon receiving the notification, the Commission is mandated to organize and complete a by-election within 60 days.

"The Electoral Commission has today convened a stakeholders' meeting to unveil the programme for conducting the by-election to fill the vacant position of Member of Parliament representing the people of Ajumani West Constituency in the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda," Mucunguzi said.

He noted that following receipt of the official communication from the Clerk to Parliament regarding the vacancy created by the death of Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, the Commission immediately initiated preparations to ensure compliance with the legal timelines.

According to Mucunguzi, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, the Deputy Chairperson and other Commissioners are in Ajumani to engage stakeholders and officially launch the electoral roadmap.

The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for participants to understand the Commission's programme, offer feedback and pledge support towards conducting a peaceful, transparent and credible by-election.

Among the key milestones to be announced are the dates for updating the National Voters Register, displaying the register for public inspection, nomination of candidates, campaign activities, polling day, tallying of votes and declaration of results.

These benchmarks will guide all stakeholders throughout the electoral process and provide political parties, independent candidates and voters with a clear timetable for the exercise.

"The Commission will state a number of benchmarks for conducting the by-election, including when the voters' register will be updated, when it will be displayed, the nomination period, campaign period and finally the polling date," Mucunguzi explained.

He emphasized that stakeholder participation is critical in ensuring that the electoral process is conducted smoothly and peacefully, urging all actors to cooperate with the Commission and observe the electoral laws.

By the close of business today, residents of Ajumani West are expected to know the complete electoral roadmap that will culminate in the election of a new Member of Parliament to represent them in the 12th Parliament.

The by-election is expected to draw significant political attention as parties and aspiring candidates prepare to contest for the seat left vacant by Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, one of Uganda's longest-serving public servants whose distinguished career spanned decades in both the military and national politics.

The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair, transparent and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the people of Ajumani West while adhering to the Constitution and the country's electoral laws.
