As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) officially opened its expression of interest process for the 2026 general elections, Godwin Mpairwe has declared his intention to become the party's flag bearer for Member of Parliament in Ibanda South Constituency.

Mpairwe picked up the expression of interest forms this week, signaling the start of what he described as a people-centered campaign focused on addressing critical challenges facing the constituency. Speaking to local media shortly after the announcement, Mpairwe painted a grim picture of the current state of infrastructure and public service delivery in Ibanda South.

“The roads in my area are in bad shape,” Mpairwe lamented. “I will work closely with the responsible government agencies to improve our road network, ensuring that people can access markets, schools, and health facilities with ease.”

Mpairwe highlighted education and healthcare as priority areas, noting that many schools in the constituency are severely understaffed, and health centers lack essential personnel and equipment.

“Our schools are lacking teachers, and this is affecting the future of our children,” he said. “In addition, the health centers do not have doctors, and hospitals are under-equipped. These are life-threatening issues that I will prioritize once I’m entrusted with the mandate.”

Mpairwe also spoke passionately about the widespread poverty in Ibanda South, despite the government's intervention through the Parish Development Model (PDM), which is intended to uplift communities at the grassroots level. He promised to be a vocal advocate for the people in Parliament and ensure government programs are effectively implemented to benefit the intended recipients.

“I have come as their voice,” he said. “I will speak on their behalf if they endorse me as the NRM flag bearer.”

The launch of the NRM expression of interest process marks the beginning of internal preparations for the 2026 general elections. The NRM Electoral Commission, led by Dr. Tanga Odoi, announced that the party is now accepting applications from members aspiring to contest for various positions—ranging from parliamentary seats to district chairperson and other local government roles.

Dr. Tanga Odoi emphasized that the process will be transparent and fair, allowing all interested candidates a level playing field to compete for the party’s endorsement.

Mpairwe’s entry into the race is expected to spark renewed political activity in Ibanda South, where voters are eagerly watching to see which candidate will best represent their concerns and deliver transformative development.

As campaigns begin to take shape ahead of the party primaries, Mpairwe is positioning himself as a candidate of action and accountability—vowing to turn the tide for Ibanda South and bring tangible change to the people he seeks to represent.
