Hundreds Nominated as EC Opens Exercise, NRM’s Alitubeera Martha Cleared for Rubaga III Lord Councillor Race

The Electoral Commission has Wednesday officially opened the nomination exercise for the 2026 General Elections, clearing hundreds of aspirants across the country, including the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Alitubeera Martha.

Alitubera, the incumbent Lord Councillor for Rubaga III, was duly nominated in Kampala and will be seeking another term under the NRM ticket.

Her candidature is expected to draw attention in Rubaga Division, an area that has become a hotbed of competition between NRM, opposition parties, and independents.

In a twist of events, a significant number of National Unity Platform (NUP) members who failed to secure the party’s endorsement during the vetting process have also been nominated to run as independents, while others have crossed to different political formations. This has heightened the stakes in several divisions, including Rubaga.

Speaking after her nomination, Alitubeera pledged to focus her next term on women’s empowerment and youth employment programs. She emphasized that Rubaga III, which covers five parishes Kabowa, Mutundwe, Najjanankumbi I, Najjanankumbi II, and Nateete needs practical solutions that directly uplift livelihoods.

“I want to champion income-generating projects for women and create more employment avenues for the youth. Our division has the potential to transform if leaders work closely with the community,” Alitubera said.

With the nomination exercise underway, Rubaga III is now set for a highly contested race as candidates from different political affiliations prepare to convince voters ahead of polling day.
