The Governor of Trans Nzoia County, George Natembeya, this week hosted His Royal Highness the Umukuuka wa Bugisu, HRH Sir Jude Mike Mudoma III, in a landmark cultural visit aimed at reinforcing historical ties and unity between communities in eastern Uganda and western Kenya.

The two-day visit, held on April 29–30, 2026, underscored the enduring kinship between the Bamasaba of Uganda and the Bukusu of Kenya—communities that share deep ancestral roots, language similarities, and cultural traditions that transcend modern national borders.

Governor Natembeya described the visit as a significant step in promoting “cultural diplomacy” and regional cohesion.

“It was a pleasure hosting such a distinguished guest and fostering stronger cultural ties,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of preserving shared heritage as a foundation for peace and cooperation.

Strengthening Historical Bonds

During his visit, the Umukuuka held engagements with community leaders, including a notable meeting with the Bukusu Council of Elders at the Kitale National Museum. The discussions focused on shared customs, clan systems, and the need to sustain intergenerational cultural knowledge.

The Bukusu and Bugisu communities—collectively part of the larger Luhya-speaking group—have for generations maintained close social and familial ties despite being separated by the Kenya-Uganda border. Leaders at the meeting highlighted the importance of such exchanges in strengthening identity and fostering unity in the region.

Delegation and Cultural Engagements

The Umukuuka was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included spokesperson Hon. Steven Masiga, Culture Minister Hon. Moses Kutoi, and Hon. Sakwa Napokoli, among other dignitaries. The delegation engaged with clan chairpersons representing Bamasaba communities residing in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties, further deepening grassroots cultural connections.

These interactions provided a platform for dialogue on cultural preservation, leadership structures, and collaboration in promoting heritage-based development initiatives.

Symbol of Regional Unity

The visit is being viewed as a powerful symbol of cross-border unity, particularly at a time when cultural identity continues to play a vital role in regional stability. By strengthening people-to-people connections, leaders believe such engagements can complement formal diplomatic relations between Kenya and Uganda.

Following the successful conclusion of the visit, the Umukuuka and his delegation returned to Uganda on May 1, 2026. They were officially received at the Lwakhakha border by Hon. John Musila( Bubulo East MP), marking the end of a visit widely regarded as both culturally enriching and diplomatically significant.

Observers note that continued cultural exchanges between the Bamasaba and Bukusu communities could pave the way for broader cooperation in areas such as tourism, trade, and education. With shared heritage as a unifying force, leaders on both sides of the border are optimistic about building a more integrated and harmonious regional future.

The visit by the Umukuuka stands as a reminder that cultural institutions remain central to identity, unity, and peacebuilding in East Africa.
