President Museveni Calls on Kiruhura Families to Focus on Productive Enterprise

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on the people of Kiruhura District to focus on building household prosperity by taking advantage of government programmes designed to boost economic empowerment. He made the remarks during a well-attended campaign rally in the district, where he was warmly received by local leaders, residents, and NRM supporters.

Addressing the crowd, the President reflected on his early days in Rwakitura, recalling how he left behind the excitement of town life to settle in an area that many saw as remote. He noted that while others spent their time in discos and entertainment spots, he chose to pursue pasture and farming, a decision that taught him valuable lessons about long-term wealth creation.

Many people initially laughed at his choice, he said, but it later became an opportunity to educate Ugandans about the true sources of prosperity. He emphasized that wealth is most meaningful when it is generated and retained at the household level, rather than simply appreciating development around one’s community.

To illustrate his point, President Museveni shared the story of Matongo, a man from a modest rural background with no formal education, who has managed to build a stable and prosperous livelihood. Despite living far from tarmac roads and other modern infrastructure, Matongo has achieved economic success, unlike some individuals who live in areas with good roads and electricity but remain trapped in poverty.

“The lesson is simple,” the President said. “Government will handle what belongs to all of us—roads, schools, electricity, hospitals. But you must handle what belongs to you as a family. Wealth should be in your pocket, not just around you.”

He urged residents to fully embrace the government’s wealth creation initiatives, including programmes under the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, agricultural financing schemes and other livelihood interventions tailored to support productive citizens. With these programmes, he said, no one should remain poor if they put the funds and opportunities to proper use.

President Museveni reiterated that the NRM government remains committed to improving public infrastructure and social services across Uganda, but reminded citizens that personal prosperity depends on individual effort, smart enterprise, and disciplined use of resources.

Local leaders thanked the President for his long-standing support to the district and pledged continued mobilization to ensure the success of government programmes. Residents also expressed appreciation for improved services in the area, citing better roads, schools and electricity connections.

The rally in Kiruhura is part of President Museveni’s ongoing nationwide engagements aimed at reinforcing the NRM’s message on wealth creation, economic transformation, and household participation in national development.
