Huawei Uganda’s 2024 CSR Report Highlights Digital Inclusion, Youth Empowerment, and ICT Growth

Huawei Technologies Uganda has released its 2024 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, showcasing a year of impactful initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide, empowering youth, and fostering ICT talent across Uganda.
According to Huawei Uganda’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ronnie Arinda, the report underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and social responsibility. "Through various initiatives, projects, and partnerships, we are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of Ugandans," he noted.
One of Huawei’s flagship projects, the Huawei DigiTruck, continues to transform Uganda’s digital landscape by providing free digital skills training to underserved communities. Launched by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on March 8, 2023, the initiative aims to equip 10,000 Ugandans over three years with essential digital skills.
So far, the solar powered, mobile ICT classroom has trained over 6,000 Ugandans across different regions, offering courses in digital literacy, online job applications, business registration, and soft skills. Special focus is given to women, youth, informal sector workers, and people with disabilities.
Huawei’s Leadership, Employability, Advancement Possibility (LEAP) program, formerly known as Seeds for the Future, has continued its mission to train Uganda’s future ICT leaders. Since its launch in 2016, over 50 Ugandans have trained physically in China, while 162 others have benefited from virtual sessions.
In 2024, 14 Ugandan participants traveled to China for advanced training in technology, leadership, and innovation. Flagging off one of the groups in November, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja emphasized the importance of equipping Uganda’s youth with world-class digital skills to compete globally.
The National ICT Job Fair 2024, held on November 21–22 at the National ICT Innovation Hub, Nakawa, provided a platform for youth to network with top employers and access job opportunities in Uganda’s growing ICT sector.
The job fair, which started in 2022, seeks to tackle youth unemployment through digital transformation. In 2024, Huawei provided 11 internship positions, all of which transitioned into full-time employment, alongside 500 free ICT training opportunities for Ugandan youth.
Uganda’s ICT talent gained international recognition at the 8th Huawei ICT Competition Global Final (2023–2024) in Shenzhen, China. Competing against over 170,000 students from 80+ countries, Ugandan teams excelled, with Gulu University and Muni University winning the Grand Prize in the Network Track, Kabale University taking First Prize in the same category, and Muni University securing Second Prize in the Computing Track. Kabale University’s team also won the Women in Tech Award.
The 12 member Ugandan team, flagged off by First Lady and Minister of Education, Maama Janet Museveni, was honored in December at a ceremony led by Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo, State Minister for Higher Education. Students received awards worth UGX 40 million, celebrating their excellence in ICT innovation.
Through initiatives like DigiTruck, LEAP, ICT Competitions, and the National ICT Job Fair, Huawei Uganda is solidifying its role in shaping Uganda’s digital future. Deputy Managing Director Gao Jian reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment. "Through ICT, beneficiaries have become architects of their own destinies."
As Uganda moves towards its Vision 2040 goal of a digital economy, Huawei’s continued investment in skills development, innovation, and job creation is positioning the nation’s youth at the forefront of global technological advancement.
