Michael Kabaziguruka Declares Candidacy for Nakawa East MP Seat, Promises to Uplift Residents’ Welfare
The former legislator, who previously represented Nakawa Division from 2016 to 2021, is banking on his renewed popularity and a strong commitment to improving the lives of his constituents.

Following the recent Supreme Court ruling that declared the trial of civilians in military courts unconstitutional, Hon. Michael Kabaziguruka has announced his intention to contest for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat in the 2026-2031 term. The former legislator, who previously represented Nakawa Division from 2016 to 2021, is banking on his renewed popularity and a strong commitment to improving the lives of his constituents.
Speaking on his decision to return to active politics, Kabaziguruka emphasized that leadership is a calling rather than a convenience. He stated that his motivation to contest is driven by a desire to fight poverty and empower the people of Nakawa East, whom he believes have been neglected by their current leadership.
“To me, politics is a calling. I am not in politics out of convenience but rather conviction. I am here to help fight poverty. Our people have what it takes to be rich, but they lack the mindset,” Kabaziguruka said.
The former MP argued that many Ugandans, particularly those in the informal sector, earn substantial incomes but struggle due to poor financial management and mindset barriers. He vowed to spearhead efforts to transform the economic outlook of Nakawa East by promoting financial literacy and small-scale entrepreneurship.
Kabaziguruka outlined his agenda, highlighting the need for structured initiatives to help his constituents escape poverty. He emphasized that unemployment remains a pressing issue in Nakawa East and across the country. To address this, he intends to mobilize residents into small-scale enterprises and equip them with practical skills to ensure sustainable livelihoods.
“I will now focus on small-scale undertakings to help people get out of poverty because the issue of unemployment is big. Leaders at all levels must mobilize people into small undertakings but also give them opportunities for skills,” he explained.
He noted that Nakawa East, like many urban constituencies, is home to a significant number of informal workers, including market vendors and small-scale traders, who need structured support to maximize their economic potential.
Beyond economic empowerment, Kabaziguruka stressed the importance of proper urban planning and land use. He pointed out that many city dwellers are forced to settle in wetlands and road reserves due to poor planning, a problem he aims to address if elected.
“We need better physical planning for the city so that people don’t live in wetlands and road reserves, among other areas,” he said.
By advocating for responsible urbanization policies, Kabaziguruka hopes to create a more sustainable and habitable environment for Nakawa East residents.
As an opposition figure, Kabaziguruka expressed concerns over the dominance of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Parliament. He argued that budgetary decisions often fail to address the pressing needs of ordinary Ugandans due to NRM’s majority control. He, therefore, called on voters to elect opposition leaders who are committed to championing the interests of the people.
“Parliament passes budgets, but it has become a ritual since it is largely occupied by NRM, and these don’t focus on issues affecting the ordinary Ugandan. I want to reach out to people to vote for those who feel for them and are going to drive their agenda. Let them vote for people like Kabaziguruka,” he urged.
Having previously served as MP for Nakawa Division, Kabaziguruka believes he has unfinished business. He urged voters to grant him a second opportunity to implement projects that were left incomplete during his first term.
His campaign is expected to focus heavily on economic empowerment, urban development, and the promotion of opposition candidates across the country. As the 2026 general elections approach, Kabaziguruka’s return to the political arena is set to reignite debates on governance, poverty eradication, and representation in Parliament.
With his renewed commitment and a clear agenda for change, Michael Kabaziguruka is positioning himself as the alternative leader for Nakawa East, promising to prioritize the welfare of his constituents above all else.
