Nakawa East MP Hon. Ruhindi(NRM) Approved to Chair Parliament's Rules, Privileges and Discipline Committee
Hon. Ruhindi will be deputized by Hon. Abdu Swaibu Kampanya, the Member of Parliament for Iki-Iki County, following their approval to lead the committee during today's parliamentary session.
The Parliament of Uganda has approved Hon. Fredrick Ruhindi, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa East, as the new Chairperson of the Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline, one of the House's key accountability committees responsible for safeguarding parliamentary order, ethics and procedural integrity.
Hon. Ruhindi will be deputized by Hon. Abdu Swaibu Kampanya, the Member of Parliament for Iki-Iki County, following their approval to lead the committee during today's parliamentary session.
The appointment places Ruhindi at the helm of a committee that plays a central role in ensuring that Parliament conducts its business in accordance with the Rules of Procedure while upholding the conduct and privileges expected of legislators.
The Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline is mandated to oversee the code of conduct governing Members of Parliament, interpret and enforce the Rules of Procedure of Parliament, and handle matters relating to discipline, misconduct and ethical breaches arising during parliamentary proceedings.
Its work is considered fundamental to maintaining decorum in the House, ensuring orderly debate and preserving the dignity and integrity of Parliament.
As Chairperson, Ruhindi will guide the committee in examining matters referred to it by the Speaker or the House, including alleged violations of parliamentary rules, questions relating to members' privileges and recommendations on disciplinary action where necessary.
His leadership is expected to contribute to strengthening parliamentary governance, accountability and adherence to established legislative procedures.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chairperson Hon. Abdu Swaibu Kampanya will support the committee's work by assisting in coordinating its activities and deputizing the Chairperson whenever required.
The approval of the committee leadership comes as Parliament continues to constitute and operationalize its sectoral and standing committees, which are essential for scrutinizing legislation, overseeing government activities and ensuring effective execution of Parliament's constitutional mandate.
With Ruhindi and Kampanya at the helm, the Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting ethical leadership, enforcing parliamentary standards and ensuring that the conduct of Members remains consistent with the values and principles of Uganda's legislative institution.
