NEC Hold Vipers SC to a 1–1 Draw in a High-Intensity Uganda Premier League Clash

NEC FC and Vipers SC played out a gripping 1–1 draw on Friday evening at the Phillip Omondi Stadium, a result that left both sides with mixed feelings after a contest full of pace, pressure, and key turning points.

The encounter, held under floodlights and in front of an energized crowd, saw Vipers remain atop the Uganda Premier League table with 17 points from seven matches, while NEC climbed to 11 points after nine outings.

Early Pressure and NEC’s Bright Start

The hosts nearly took the lead inside two minutes when Innocent Media unleashed a low drive towards goal. Vipers’ dependable goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza reacted quickly, pushing the shot out for an early corner and setting the tone for an intense evening.

NEC continued to dictate the opening exchanges with quick transitions and sharp movements on the wings. Their breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute after Livingstone Mulondo clipped Media inside the penalty area. Referee’s decision was clear—penalty to NEC.

Mustapha Kizza, calm and composed, stepped forward and sent Mudekereza the wrong way, giving NEC a deserved 1–0 advantage. The early lead lifted the hosts’ confidence, and they continued to push forward, with Media again coming close on 35 minutes. His strong run down the right ended with a powerful strike, but Mudekereza once again stood firm to deny NEC a second goal.

Vipers Forced Into Early Adjustments

Vipers SC struggled to establish their rhythm in midfield, prompting an early tactical change. Hard-tackling midfielder Taddeo Lwanga made way for Milton Karisa in the 43rd minute—a switch that would later prove decisive.

Despite NEC’s dominance in the first half, Vipers kept themselves within touching distance, patiently waiting for their moment to strike.

Karisa Delivers the Equalizer

Just five minutes into the second half, substitute Milton Karisa repaid his coach’s trust with a brilliant equalizer. Receiving the ball in space, Karisa unleashed a powerful effort that left the NEC goalkeeper rooted as the visitors erupted in celebration.

The goal shifted momentum in Vipers’ favour as they began to press NEC deeper into their defensive half. The Venoms pushed numbers forward, seeking a winner that would cement their place at the summit of the table.

Resilient NEC Backline Deny Vipers

Despite Vipers’ growing dominance, NEC showed excellent organisation and defensive discipline. Their backline—well-marshalled and unyielding—absorbed pressure and cleared danger whenever Vipers drew close to their territory.

The hosts remained dangerous on counter-attacks but failed to convert the half-chances that came their way, leaving the match delicately balanced until the final whistle.

In the end, both sides settled for a point—one that keeps Vipers leading the title race, while NEC continue to search for consistency in what has been a mixed start to their campaign.

What the Result Means

Vipers SC remain top of the Uganda Premier League with 17 points from 7 games, showing early-season stability and resilience.

NEC FC sit 8th with 11 points from 9 matches, needing sharper finishing but demonstrating strong defensive improvement.

The draw adds another layer of intrigue to the title race as the league gathers momentum heading into a crucial phase.
