President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Urges National Resistance Movement Chairpersons to Lead Community Push for Economic Transformation
Speaking during a meeting with party leaders, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni tasked district chairpersons of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to spearhead grassroots mobilisation in support of government wealth-creation programmes.
Uganda’s leadership of the ruling party has been urged to shift its focus from campaign victories to the deeper, long-term mission of transforming livelihoods, as the country intensifies efforts to eliminate household poverty.
Speaking during a meeting with party leaders, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni tasked district chairpersons of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to spearhead grassroots mobilisation in support of government wealth-creation programmes. He said the next decisive phase for Uganda is ensuring that families translate national stability into economic progress at the household level.
The President congratulated the chairpersons on their election and credited them for what he described as disciplined mobilisation that helped consolidate support for the ruling party. According to Museveni, the recently concluded campaigns reflected a rare sense of cohesion and organisation, comparable only to the political atmosphere witnessed during Uganda’s 1996 elections. He noted that the period demonstrated renewed unity and public confidence in the country’s direction.
Museveni emphasised that political mobilisation should now be anchored in economic transformation, urging leaders to help communities understand and actively participate in existing government programmes designed to expand incomes. He stressed that sustained prosperity would depend on consistent engagement with citizens — not only during elections — but through practical guidance on productivity, value addition, and financial discipline.
The meeting, held at State House Entebbe on Friday, February 13, brought together NRM district, municipal, and city chairpersons from across the country. It served both as a recognition of their campaign efforts and as a strategic session outlining priorities for the next phase of governance.
Party leaders were encouraged to strengthen coordination with local structures to ensure that government initiatives reach intended beneficiaries. Museveni underscored that eliminating household poverty would require persistent follow-up, community education, and accountability in programme implementation.
Observers view the President’s message as a signal that the ruling party intends to align its political structures more closely with socio-economic targets, positioning local leadership as a bridge between policy and everyday livelihoods.
As Uganda advances its development agenda, the NRM leadership is expected to play a central role in translating national programmes into tangible improvements at the grassroots — a task Museveni described as critical to securing inclusive growth and long-term stability.
