Contract Local Companies for Kiteezi Landfill Developments - UPC to Gov’t
The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has condemned alleged government proceedings of awarding foreign companies from Ghana, contracts of developing Kiteezi garbage into productive services and denying chance local companies who can also deliver similar services.
Speaking to journalists during a media brief at the party headquarters, Wednesday, the spokesperson, Ms. Arach Oyat Sharon, said that UPC has been at the forefront of advocating for proper management and recycling of waste which is a raw material for products like fertilizer, electricity and pavers. The party also emphasized the development of the kiteezi, however, last week, the media published news that the government has entered partnership with an investor from Ghana to develop the Kiteezi landfill area.
According to Ayat, “however much we need development as a country, due diligence on companies or investors undertaking such projects is paramount to avoid fleecing of public funds, therefore UPC calls upon the government to prioritize local companies that deal in such business to promote the Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU) campaign.”
In addition, she emphasized that the government should use such avenues to employ and empower as many Ugandans as it could other than letting such opportunities be granted to foreigners.
For reference, last week, the government of Uganda through the state Minister for Kampala, Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye signed a contract with Jospong group of companies, a Ghanaian based company dealing in turning garbage wastes into useful resources.
The contract was also signed at the Kiteezi Landfill scene, however, during the handover ceremony, Hon. Kyofatogabye said that the contract between the government of Uganda and the Jospong group of companies from Ghana starts immediately, highlighting that in a time frame of six months only , the garbage will be cleared with plans of putting up recreational centers.
