The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, made a significant visit to Ugandan troops operating in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under Operation Shujaa. His visit reaffirmed the commitment of the UPDF and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) to jointly address shared security challenges and promote regional stability.

General Muhoozi arrived in the North Kivu Province on Thursday, marking a crucial engagement aimed at boosting the morale of troops and enhancing coordination with FARDC. After his engagements in North Kivu, the CDF proceeded to the neighboring Ituri Province, where he met with UPDF commanders and other key military stakeholders. His discussions included strategies for combatting armed groups, restoring security, and ensuring the protection of civilians in the volatile region.

During his visit, Gen. Muhoozi underscored the importance of the UPDF-FARDC partnership in Operation Shujaa, which has been instrumental in countering the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and other armed groups destabilizing Eastern DRC. He praised the dedication and resilience of the troops operating under challenging conditions, emphasizing that their efforts are critical for fostering peace and stability not only in the DRC but also in the wider Great Lakes region. “The UPDF remains committed to working with FARDC to address security concerns that affect both nations. Together, we will continue to neutralize threats and ensure the safety of our people,” said Gen. Muhoozi.

In addition to boosting troop morale, the CDF held high-level discussions with military commanders and other stakeholders. These meetings focused on evaluating the progress of Operation Shujaa, identifying areas for improvement, and enhancing cross-border collaboration. Gen. Muhoozi also interacted with militants who had laid down their arms, emphasizing the need for peaceful reintegration into society as part of the broader stabilization strategy.

Operation Shujaa, a joint military initiative launched in November 2021, is aimed at eliminating the ADF, a rebel group that has terrorized Eastern DRC and threatened Uganda’s security. The operation has achieved several milestones, including the destruction of ADF camps and the capture of key leaders. However, challenges such as difficult terrain, civilian displacement, and the emergence of other armed groups remain.

Gen. Muhoozi's visit reflects Uganda's broader commitment to regional security. By collaborating with FARDC and other regional actors, the UPDF aims to create conditions for sustainable peace and economic development. The visit also sends a strong message of solidarity to the troops and communities affected by conflict, reassuring them of Uganda's unwavering support.

As the operation progresses, Uganda and the DRC remain optimistic about achieving their shared goal of eradicating armed groups and fostering a peaceful environment for their citizens.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s visit to Eastern DRC highlights the strategic importance of Operation Shujaa in addressing shared security challenges. It underscores the UPDF's dedication to promoting peace, stability, and regional cooperation. The ongoing collaboration between the UPDF and FARDC serves as a model for effective joint military operations in the fight against transnational threats.

This visit is a testament to Uganda's leadership in ensuring that security concerns in the Great Lakes region are met with decisive and coordinated action.
