The 2026 UMEA Solidarity Games have successfully come to a thrilling close in Mbale City, with Gombe Secondary School once again stamping their authority as the undisputed giants of the competition.

Gombe SS emerged as the overall champions after an impressive medal haul of five gold medals, edging out perennial rivals Kibuli Secondary School, who finished as first runners-up with four gold medals in a fiercely competitive edition of the annual games. Hosted by Nkoma Secondary School under the theme “Faith, Unity and Excellence through Sports,” this year’s tournament attracted a remarkable 47 schools, featuring 122 teams and a total of 1,591 athletes competing across a wide range of disciplines including football, netball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, badminton, scrabble, and chess.

Football Showdowns Highlight Thrilling Competition

In boys’ football, Kyaddondo Secondary School emerged champions after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Masaka Secondary School in a tightly contested final. Buziga Islamic claimed third place.

Meanwhile, Kawempe Muslim Secondary School continued their dominance in girls’ football, securing their seventh title with a convincing 2-0 win over hosts Nkoma SS. Their B team also showed depth by finishing third, underlining the school’s strength in the sport.

Netball and Volleyball Deliver High Drama

Kawanda Secondary School reclaimed the netball crown in dramatic fashion, overcoming Kadugala Secondary School in an epic final. Last year’s champions, Greenlight Islamic Secondary School, had to settle for third place.

In volleyball, Kinaawa High School – Mugongo extended their dominance in the girls’ category, while Mbogo Mixed maintained their superiority in boys’ volleyball, both schools further cementing their legacy in the sport.

Gombe’s All-Round Excellence Shines Through

Gombe SS’s overall triumph was built on consistent performances across multiple disciplines. They dominated in both boys’ and girls’ handball, securing gold in both categories. They also excelled in mind sports, winning gold in both boys’ and girls’ scrabble, as well as girls’ chess.
