Museveni Consoles Landslide Victims, Rallies Bukwo Residents to Embrace Wealth Creation as Campaigns Move to Sebei Region

Bukwo District — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Bukwo District following the recent landslide that claimed several lives and destroyed property. The President said the government had already sent some emergency support to the affected families and pledged additional assistance to help them rebuild their lives.

“I extend my condolences to the people of Bukwo for the lives lost in the recent landslide. I have already sent some support, and the government will do even more to help the affected families,” President Museveni said.

He attributed the recurring landslides to population pressure on the mountain slopes, urging residents to adopt sustainable settlement and land-use practices to prevent future disasters.

“In the past, when the population was small, the mountain was safe. Now that more people have settled there, we must use it wisely,” the President explained.

While addressing residents, President Museveni noted that the Sebei sub-region, particularly Bukwo, possesses immense potential beyond agriculture. He emphasized the need for diversification and called for the development of tourism as an alternative source of income. “Agriculture alone is not the only way; tourism is another major opportunity. After the elections, we shall discuss a clear strategy for living with the mountain,” he assured.

The President also used his visit to remind the people of Bukwo about the seven key contributions of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) over the past 40 years. At the heart of these, he said, are peace and stability—achievements that have provided the foundation for Uganda’s social and economic transformation.

“The first is peace, achieved through our ideology of patriotism and love for Uganda and Africa,” he stated, adding that it is this peace that has enabled development across all sectors.

He further highlighted the government’s continued investment in infrastructure and public services.

“The second is development, including roads, electricity, telephones, piped water, and soon, the railway,” he said.

However, President Museveni stressed that national development alone is not enough unless it translates into personal prosperity for every household. He encouraged the people of Bukwo to embrace government wealth-creation initiatives designed to lift citizens out of subsistence farming and into the money economy.

“With programs like NAADs, Operation Wealth Creation, and now the Parish Development Model (PDM), every household should join the money economy,” the President emphasized.

The Head of State reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring that no Ugandan remains trapped in poverty, saying that prosperity for all remains the NRM’s guiding mission. He urged the people of Bukwo to make use of available government programs and adopt modern economic practices for a secure and prosperous future.

As the 2026 general elections draw closer, President Museveni’s message in Bukwo underscores a broader vision for Uganda — one that combines peace, economic transformation, and sustainable living in harmony with nature.
