Kampala, April 11, 2026 — Parents and guardians at Luzira Secondary School have been urged to adopt practical, intentional strategies to navigate the growing challenges of parenting in today’s fast-paced and demanding world.

Delivering a keynote address during the school’s PTA Annual General Meeting, Dr. Annette Kirabira emphasized that modern parenting is less about perfection and more about presence, planning, and purposeful engagement with children.

Balancing Work and Family Life

Dr. Kirabira highlighted the increasing pressure on parents to meet both professional and family obligations, noting that achieving balance requires conscious effort.

She stressed that creating an environment where both work and family thrive demands careful planning, open communication, and patience. “It’s not about being perfect,” she noted, “but about being present and making the most of the time you have with your children.”

Quality Time Matters Most

With many parents juggling tight schedules, Dr. Kirabira underscored the importance of prioritizing quality over quantity. She encouraged parents to make interactions with their children meaningful by showing genuine interest in their lives.

“Even when you don’t agree, listen,” she advised, adding that such engagement reassures children of love and builds trust.

The Power of Routine and Stability

The parenting expert also pointed to the importance of establishing consistent routines. According to her, predictable schedules create a sense of psychological safety for children, helping them feel secure and supported.

She explained that structured routines not only benefit children but also enable parents to manage time effectively and reduce stress.

Shared Parenting and Support Systems

Dr. Kirabira called for shared responsibility between parents, emphasizing that parenting should not be left to one individual. She encouraged couples to communicate openly and divide responsibilities intentionally.

She further urged families to build strong support networks, noting that parenting is a collective effort. “It takes a village to raise a child,” she said, encouraging parents to seek help from friends, extended family, and professionals when necessary.

Leveraging Technology and Setting Boundaries

In an era dominated by digital tools, Dr. Kirabira advised parents to use technology wisely—such as digital calendars and reminders—to stay organized and manage responsibilities.

At the same time, she emphasized the need to set clear boundaries between work and home life, including maintaining defined work hours and communicating these boundaries to employers.

Instilling Responsibility in Children

Parents were also encouraged to involve children in household chores as a way of building responsibility, work ethic, and family cohesion. Making such tasks enjoyable, she said, strengthens family bonds while reducing parental workload.

Self-Care and Open Communication

Dr. Kirabira reminded parents that self-care is essential, not optional. She noted that physically and mentally healthy parents are better equipped to nurture their children effectively.

She also encouraged open communication with employers, pointing out that many workplaces are increasingly accommodating flexible arrangements such as remote work and adjusted schedules.

Celebrating Progress and Encouraging Positive Behavior

Highlighting the importance of motivation, Dr. Kirabira urged parents to celebrate small wins, from improved academic performance to simple family moments. She emphasized positive reinforcement as a powerful tool in shaping children’s behavior. “Catch your children doing good,” she said, noting that recognition builds self-esteem and encourages continued positive conduct.

Staying Organized for Success

Effective organization, she added, is key to successful parenting. Planning ahead—often beginning the previous evening—helps families stay on track and avoid unnecessary stress.

School Context and Welfare Update

The PTA AGM also provided insight into the school’s current status. Luzira Secondary School has a student population of 3,308 learners, comprising 1,703 girls and 1,605 boys.

School administrators revealed that the estimated welfare contribution for 2026 stands at UGX 2.95 billion. As of April 9, 2026, UGX 1.18 billion had been collected, representing 40 percent of the target.

A Call to Intentional Parenting

Dr. Kirabira concluded her address with a call for parents to remain intentional, engaged, and supportive in their children’s lives despite the pressures of modern living.

Her message resonated strongly with attendees, reinforcing the idea that while parenting in today’s world is complex, practical strategies rooted in love, structure, and communication can make a lasting difference.
