Gogonyo, Pallisa District – The Member of Parliament for Gogonyo County, Hon. Derrick Orone, has launched the Gogonyo Examination Bureau and contributed Shs10 million towards the establishment of the Gogonyo County Primary Teachers Association, in a move aimed at improving academic standards and enhancing performance in primary schools across the constituency.
The launch brought together head teachers, classroom teachers, education officials, and local leaders, who used the occasion to discuss the challenges affecting the quality of education in the area and propose practical solutions to improve learning outcomes.
During the meeting, teachers highlighted several factors that have contributed to the poor performance of pupils in national examinations, particularly the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Among the major concerns raised were high rates of absenteeism among learners, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate teaching and learning materials, and the lack of meals and welfare support for teachers.
The teachers noted that many schools are grappling with large pupil populations, making it difficult for educators to provide individual attention to learners. They also expressed concern over the limited motivation and facilitation for teachers, which they said has negatively impacted morale and performance.
Despite these challenges, the teachers pledged to work harder and remain committed to improving academic standards in Gogonyo County. They promised to strengthen supervision, increase learner engagement, and collaborate closely with parents and community leaders to ensure better performance in future examinations.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Orone said education remains one of the key pillars of development and pledged his continued support towards initiatives that promote academic excellence in the constituency.
The legislator announced that he will be facilitating the administration of regular examinations by sourcing examination papers from Kampala every two weeks. He explained that the initiative is intended to expose learners to continuous assessment and examination conditions well ahead of the Primary Leaving Examinations.
"I want our children to compete favourably with learners from other parts of the country. Regular assessments will help identify weaknesses early and prepare our pupils adequately for the PLE," Hon. Orone said.
He emphasized that the newly launched Gogonyo Examination Bureau will play a crucial role in coordinating assessments, monitoring school performance, and providing data that can guide interventions aimed at improving educational outcomes.
The MP further urged parents to take a more active role in their children's education by ensuring regular school attendance and providing the necessary support at home. He called upon all stakeholders, including teachers, local leaders, and development partners, to work together in addressing the challenges facing the education sector in Gogonyo County.
Education stakeholders who attended the event welcomed the establishment of the examination bureau and the formation of the teachers' association, describing the initiatives as timely interventions that could significantly improve the quality of education in the area.
The launch of the Gogonyo Examination Bureau and the creation of the Gogonyo County Primary Teachers Association mark a significant step towards strengthening education systems in the constituency, with leaders and educators expressing optimism that the initiatives will contribute to improved academic performance and better results in future Primary Leaving Examinations.
