From Bukedea to Glory: Amus College Clinch FUFA Women’s Cup Title"
With the game seemingly headed for a penalty shootout, a decisive twist came just two minutes from full time. In a moment of high pressure, Kawempe’s Samali Nakacwa inadvertently bundled the ball into her own net, unable to withstand the pressing run of Amus striker Opisa Shalyne, who had been a consistent threat throughout the tournament. That own goal sparked jubilant scenes from the Amus technical bench and travelling supporters who celebrated the culmination of their team’s determined campaign.

Amus College Women Football Club has carved a golden chapter in Ugandan women’s football history by clinching their first-ever FUFA Women’s Cup title. The Bukedea-based side emerged triumphant after a tightly contested 1-0 victory over four-time league champions Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC in the final played at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
The dramatic finale to the sixth edition of Uganda’s prestigious women’s knockout competition unfolded before a lively crowd, many of whom responded to FUFA’s rallying call for greater support of the women’s game, gaining free access to witness a landmark moment.
The final was a cagey affair. Both teams matched each other stride for stride, displaying defensive discipline and tactical caution. Few clear chances were created, with Amus’s best opportunity in open play coming in the 67th minute when Tamis Shafiga sent a powerful header narrowly over the crossbar. Kawempe responded with waves of substitutions, including the introductions of Claire Kebirungi and Adong Mebel, aiming to unlock the opposition defense, but Amus remained composed and unyielding.
Kawempe’s closest moment came in the 74th minute when Agnes Nabukenya threaded a brilliant pass to Jovia Nakagolo, who found herself one-on-one with Amus goalkeeper Ritah Namukisa. However, Namukisa produced a stunning reflex save to deny the midfielder, a moment that proved pivotal in preserving Amus’s clean sheet.
Adding an emotional and symbolic touch to the grand occasion, Aminah Nakato, the captain of last year’s champions She Corporate FC, ceremoniously carried the trophy onto the pitch at halftime and once again after fulltime. The gesture served as a passing of the torch and a celebration of continuity, tradition, and sisterhood in women’s football.
Amus College WFC’s path to the title was anything but straightforward. They opened their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 away victory over Isra Soccer Academy in the Round of 32. A walkover win against Asubo Ladies gave them a breather in the Round of 16, before they edged Wakiso Hill WFC 3-2 in a pulsating quarterfinal.
Their most emphatic performance came in the semifinals, where they stunned 2023 champions Uganda Martyrs Lubaga with a dominant 4-2 aggregate win, propelled by the tireless efforts of Opisa Shalyne, who proved instrumental in their cup run.
Kawempe Muslim LFC, who boast an illustrious record in league football, were hoping to finally add the elusive FUFA Women’s Cup title to their cabinet. Their road to the final included strong victories over Royal Dreamers, Makerere University, and She Corporate FC, before they edged out St Noa Girls SS in the semifinal. However, they once again fell agonizingly short on the final stage.
