New Uganda Cricket Association Executive Elected: Kavuma Jackson Takes Over as Chairman

The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has ushered in a new leadership team following elections held during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Kati Kati in Lugogo. In a tightly contested race, Jackson Kavuma emerged victorious as the new Chairman, succeeding Michael Nuwagaba. The new executive is set to serve for the next two years, bringing fresh energy and strategic plans to propel Ugandan cricket to new heights.

Jackson Kavuma, who previously served as UCA’s Honorary Secretary, takes the helm at a crucial moment when Uganda is making strides on the international cricket stage. Backed by Africa Cricket Club (ACC), Kavuma ran a campaign centered on improving governance, strengthening Uganda’s competitiveness in international tournaments, and securing land for a new cricket facility. His leadership comes at a time when Uganda has recently made its debut at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and is ambitiously pushing for One Day International (ODI) status by 2028.

In his acceptance speech, Kavuma highlighted the need for unity and strategic planning to build on recent successes. "Ugandan cricket is at a turning point. We must consolidate our progress, improve our structures, and position ourselves among the top cricketing nations in Africa and beyond," he stated.

The elections also saw the selection of other key officials who will work alongside Kavuma in steering Ugandan cricket forward.

Denis Musali – Honorary Secretary A former national team player and the outgoing UCA Communications Officer, Musali was elected as the new Honorary Secretary.

Representing Wanderers Cricket Club, he has pledged to enhance the commercial viability of Ugandan cricket, including introducing new tournaments and strengthening grassroots development programs. 

Musali emphasized the need for unity and collective effort, stating:

"It’s time to put our differences aside and focus on the development of cricket."

Lelia Namaganda Ondeko – Women’s Representative Running unopposed, Lelia Namaganda Ondeko will serve as the Women’s Representative. Her role will be pivotal in promoting and expanding women’s cricket in Uganda, ensuring more opportunities for female players in national and international competitions.

With a renewed mandate, the new UCA executive has outlined several key areas of focus:

Improving Governance and Administrative Efficiency

Strengthening transparency and accountability in UCA operations. Enhancing the financial sustainability of cricket programs.

Strengthening Uganda’s Competitiveness in International Tournaments

Preparing Uganda for the 2026 T20 World Cup qualifiers.

Developing a roadmap for ODI status by 2028, which would mark a historic milestone for Ugandan cricket. 

Grassroots Development and Talent Identification

Expanding cricket programs at school and community levels.

Investing in coaching and infrastructure to nurture young talent. *

Securing Land for a New Cricket Facility

Establishing a modern national cricket stadium to host international events.

Partnering with the government and private investors to develop world-class cricket infrastructure.

Enhancing Commercial Viability and Fan Engagement

Introducing new domestic tournaments to attract sponsors and fans.

Strengthening media partnerships to boost the visibility of Ugandan cricket.

The election of Jackson Kavuma and his team marks a significant shift in Uganda Cricket Association’s leadership, with a strong emphasis on development, professionalism, and international competitiveness.
