NUP Under Fire for Handing Rubaga South Card to 'Slay Queen' Candidate

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing growing discontent in Rubaga South following its decision to hand the party card to Nassolo Euginea as the flagbearer for the 2026 parliamentary race.
Residents and grassroots supporters argue that Nassolo is disconnected from the struggles of ordinary people and accuse the party of sidelining incumbent Aloysius Mukasa, who has earned popularity for his consistent presence in local markets, ghettos, and community structures.
Community members say they are baffled by NUP’s choice, noting that a similar attempt was made in 2021 when Nassolo sought the party ticket but was rejected in favor of Mukasa, who went on to secure the seat and has since represented them.
“We only see her during vetting time. She lives a life of luxury and doesn’t relate to the daily challenges of Rubaga South,” one resident remarked.
Insider sources within NUP reveal that party president Robert Kyagulanyi may have come under pressure from sections of the Catholic Church, with some priests allegedly writing letters in support of Nassolo and lobbying for her endorsement. This, they claim, created internal divisions and forced the leadership’s hand in her favor.
The development has sparked open frustration among voters, with some mobilizing to throw their support behind rival candidates even from the ruling NRM if their preferred choice, Mukasa, is not reinstated.
Observers warn that NUP risks alienating its grassroots base in one of its traditional strongholds if it fails to address concerns of favoritism, internal manipulation, and disconnect between its flagbearers and the community.
