Rubaga South Residents Protest NUP Vetting Results, Threaten to Cross to NRM if Mukasa Is Dropped

A storm is brewing in Rubaga South as residents voice strong opposition to the National Unity Platform (NUP) vetting results that sidelined incumbent Member of Parliament Aloysius Mukasa in favor of Nassolo Euginea.

Mukasa, who has represented Rubaga South in the 11th Parliament, is widely credited for maintaining a visible presence among ordinary people, particularly in ghetto communities and women’s markets.

Locals say he has provided consistent support through development initiatives, mobilization, and personal engagement, something they claim Nassolo Euginea has never demonstrated.

“We cannot accept this injustice. Mukasa has been with us on the ground, in our markets and ghettos, yet the party gives the flag to someone who has never reached out to us. That is betrayal,” said one of the leaders of a ghetto youth group in Katwe.

The decision, announced after NUP’s internal vetting exercise, has left many residents questioning the transparency of the party’s processes. Critics argue that party leadership is ignoring grassroots voices and risking alienating its strongest base in Kampala.

In an unexpected twist, sections of the electorate have threatened to withdraw their support from NUP entirely. Community mobilizers revealed that if Mukasa is not reinstated, they will rally behind the ruling NRM’s candidate in protest.

“This is not about parties anymore; it is about leaders who stand with the people. If NUP cannot listen to us, we shall mobilize for NRM or any candidate who values our voices,” another resident declared.

The development underscores widening cracks within NUP, where disputes over candidate selection have repeatedly sparked discontent at the grassroots.

With the 2026 general elections drawing closer, analysts warn that such internal wrangles could weaken the party’s stronghold in urban constituencies if not urgently resolved.

For now, Rubaga South remains on edge as residents continue to petition NUP leadership to reverse the decision and restore Mukasa as the flag bearer.

Failure to address the matter, community leaders warn, could dramatically shift political loyalties in one of the opposition’s key battlegrounds.
