#RotaryEyamba Crosses Borders to Inspire the World
Mr. Geoffrey Martin Kitakule District Governor of Rotary District 9213(R) shares the impact of #RotaryEyamba

As thousands of Rotarians from across the globe gather in Taiwan for the 2026 Rotary International Convention, Uganda's innovative storytelling campaign, #RotaryEyamba, has emerged as a shining example of how local narratives can amplify community impact and strengthen Rotary's connection with the people it serves.

Held from June 14 to 17 2026 in Taipei, the convention has brought together Rotary and Rotaract members, alumni, program participants, and guests from around the world under the theme of strengthening fellowship, sharing experiences, and showcasing Rotary's transformative work globally. Among the many discussions taking place at the convention, one conversation stood out for Uganda's Rotary family: "Telling Rotary's Story Locally for Impact."

At the heart of this conversation was the success of #RotaryEyamba, a uniquely Ugandan initiative that has transformed how Rotary communicates its work to communities across the country.

The story of #RotaryEyamba has now crossed oceans, borders, and time zones, reaching an international audience and demonstrating how localized communication can deepen community engagement and showcase Rotary's life-changing interventions.

Speaking the Language of the Communities We Serve

According to Geoffrey Martin Kitakule, District Governor of Rotary District 9213, the idea behind #RotaryEyamba was born out of the need to make Rotary's message more relatable and accessible to ordinary citizens.

"As people of action, we needed to show what we do as Rotarians. Sometimes Rotarians are viewed as elitist because we are speaking in a language that locals don't understand. It is important that we communicate in a language understood by the people we are helping in our communities," Kitakule explained.

He noted that the phrase 'Eyamba', which means "helps" in Luganda, was intentionally chosen to bridge the communication gap between Rotary and the communities benefiting from its interventions.

"Really, #RotaryEyamba means that Rotary helps. It is a simple message in a local language so that people can know Rotary is there to help change their lives. That was the motivation behind this initiative," he said.

Giving Beneficiaries a Voice

For years, Rotary clubs across Uganda have implemented numerous projects in healthcare, education, water and sanitation, economic empowerment, maternal health, environmental conservation, and youth development. However, Kitakule says one of the biggest challenges has been effectively telling those stories.

"As Rotarians, we do a lot of good things in communities. We help a lot. We are people of action. But then the question becomes: how do we tell our story?" he asked.

Through #RotaryEyamba, Rotary shifted from merely reporting project activities to allowing beneficiaries themselves to narrate how Rotary interventions have changed their lives.

"When we use #RotaryEyamba, it helps us connect with beneficiaries and encourages them to come out and tell their stories. The biggest challenge is not the work we do; it is telling the story of that work. Through this initiative, communities are becoming our storytellers," Kitakule added.

This people-centered approach has enabled Rotary clubs throughout Uganda to document and share real-life testimonies from beneficiaries, creating authentic narratives that resonate more strongly with the public than traditional institutional messaging.

Uganda's Story Resonates Globally

The prominence given to #RotaryEyamba during the Rotary International Convention underscores the growing recognition of localized storytelling as a powerful tool for community engagement and public awareness.

As Rotarians from different countries share experiences on membership growth, service projects, public image, and community impact, Uganda's model has attracted attention for successfully translating Rotary's global mission into language and messages that ordinary citizens can easily understand.

The initiative demonstrates that while Rotary operates as a global movement, its effectiveness often depends on how well it connects with local communities and cultures.

Rotary's Global Gathering in Taiwan

The convention opened with a vibrant cultural showcase featuring thunderous drum performances that blended traditional Taiwanese heritage with modern artistic expression, reflecting both Taipei's cosmopolitan character and Rotary's international diversity.

Welcoming delegates on June 14, Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo reflected on his travels across the Rotary world during his term.

"Everywhere I went, I found the same spirit. Different languages, different food, different ways of welcoming a guest — but always the same Rotary heart," he said.

He encouraged attendees to celebrate Rotary's achievements while envisioning its future.

"As we begin this convention, enjoy this city and this magical island. Enjoy the rain. Enjoy this fellowship. Celebrate what we have done. And dream of what Rotary can still become."

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, addressing the opening session, described the convention as a significant occasion and thanked Taiwan's Rotary members for helping bring the world together in Taipei.

Focusing on Rotary's Areas of Impact

Throughout the convention, delegates are participating in dozens of breakout sessions highlighting Rotary's work in promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, improving maternal and child health, supporting education, growing local economies, and protecting the environment.

One of the central discussions remains Rotary's ongoing commitment to eradicating polio worldwide.

Arezzo emphasized that despite financial and operational challenges, Rotary remains committed to fulfilling its promise to protect children from the disease.

The convention also features presentations on youth engagement, environmental sustainability, technological innovation, and the application of artificial intelligence in advancing Rotary's humanitarian mission.

A Ugandan Lesson for the World

As Rotary International continues to explore innovative ways of communicating its impact, the #RotaryEyamba campaign offers a compelling lesson: meaningful change becomes more visible and sustainable when communities understand it, identify with it, and tell the story themselves.

For Uganda's Rotary District 9213, the initiative has become more than a communication campaign. It has evolved into a movement that places beneficiaries at the center of Rotary's narrative and demonstrates the power of speaking to communities in their own language.

With the world gathered in Taiwan celebrating Rotary's global achievements, #RotaryEyamba stands as proof that some of the most powerful stories begin at the local level.

And as those stories continue to be shared, Uganda's message remains simple yet profound: Rotary Helps. Rotary Eyamba.
