The team, now with two years of existence has been able to perform previously against other teams under the leadership of their patron , the University Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga and emerged as winners, Mr. Isaac lutwama CEO Uganda Rugby Union, said on Thursday at Victoria University headquarters.

Lutwama added, that this is a big step taken by the team to play in the Nile special premier League. It is a big milestone indeed the fact that it first played in the Central regional league where they also won, therefore It is not about playing Rugby but the players are also receiving welfare inform of insurance and scholarships from the University a sign that the team put together is dedicated for excellence and hope they shall give account to themselves for better results.

The patron of the team, Prof Lawrence Muganga who doubles as the university Vice Chancellor while giving clarity mentioned that the initiative is part of the University’s Social Corporate Responsibility, emphasized on instilling a spirit of collaboration, resilience, and discipline in students to help them thrive in the real world.

He explained that the focus on developing character and discipline, not just credentials. But the "spirit of giving up", collaboration, strategy, and resilience are more important than just having good credentials. Foster a "never say die or never give up" attitude is what will make students winners in all areas of life.

Muganga added and encouraged them to embrace technology and innovation because the university has made education technology-driven, leaving behind traditional methods like books and pens. This forward-thinking approach can help prepare students for the real world.

Provide an international standard education. The university aims to bring global standards to its students, not just settling for the local norms. This exposure can build resilience and adaptability. 

He, however, urged to support students to thrive, not just survive but the goal is for students to thrive in the real world and this requires a holistic approach to developing well-rounded individuals.

Mr. Ssebuliba Patrick, Chairperson Victoria Sharks rugby club addressed that all the players have been given scholarships but also described on the issue of resources and support to help players access university education. Such as Identifying funding sources and establish scholarship programs specifically for the players, whether through the university, external sponsors, or other organizations that support student-athletes.

Providing academic counseling and tutoring services to help the players succeed in their university coursework and maintain their eligibility, he said. In addition to offering mentorship programs where experienced students or alumni can guide the players on navigating university life and balancing academics with their sports commitments.

Ssebuliba, also noted that collaborating with the admissions office to streamline the application process and ensure the players meet all the requirements for admission and scholarship consideration is a key. And Securing housing, meal plans, and other essential resources to reduce the financial burden on the players and allow them to focus on their studies and training.
