Bengaluru, India – In a significant step towards enhancing defence cooperation between India and South Sudan, Lt. Gen. Chol Thon J Balok, the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs of South Sudan, held high-level discussions with India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, ahead of Aero India 2025. The meeting, held on Sunday in Bengaluru, focused on deepening military collaboration, expanding training exchanges, and initiating a framework for future defence cooperation.
Aero India 2025, the 15th edition of Asia’s largest air show and aviation exhibition, officially commenced on Monday, February 10, at Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru. The premier defence event, running until February 14, serves as a platform for global defence industry leaders, government officials, and technology experts to collaborate, showcase advanced aerospace technologies, and explore opportunities for strengthening military capabilities.
India-South Sudan Defence Cooperation: A New Chapter
During his meeting with Lt. Gen. Chol Thon J Balok, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed India's commitment to enhancing South Sudan’s defence capabilities, particularly in areas such as training, capacity building, and peacekeeping initiatives. Recognizing South Sudan’s strategic significance in East Africa, both sides expressed interest in formalizing their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at streamlining future defence engagements.
Lt. Gen. Balok, in turn, appreciated India’s contributions to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), where Indian peacekeepers have played a crucial role in maintaining stability in the region. He also highlighted South Sudan’s willingness to deepen defence ties through industry collaborations and specialized military training programs.
