Amama Mbabazi Hails Cavendish University for Preserving Benjamin Mkapa’s Legacy

Former Prime Minister and Special Presidential Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi, has applauded Cavendish University Uganda for its commitment to preserving the legacy of the late former President of Tanzania, H.E. Benjamin Mkapa.

Mbabazi made the remarks on Thursday at the 4th Benjamin Mkapa Memorial Lecture held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

The annual lecture established in 2023 honors Mkapa’s contributions to governance, democracy, and regional integration. This year’s theme, “Political Pluralism, Democracy and Social Integration in East Africa. The Legacy of H.E. Benjamin Mkapa,” brought together regional leaders, diplomats, policymakers, and academics to reflect on Mkapa’s enduring influence on East African statecraft.

Mbabazi urged students and young professionals to carry forward Mkapa’s vision by championing unity, responsible leadership, and community-driven development.

“You are the generation that will complete the projects Benjamin Mkapa started. Build bridges across society, remain united in purpose, and lead with responsibility,” he emphasized.

Cavendish University Executive Director David Mutabanura reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to upholding Mkapa’s values. He thanked partners including the Mkapa Foundation and members of the Mkapa family who joined virtually for their support in sustaining the memorial lecture.

Mutabanura also announced that the 5th Benjamin Mkapa Memorial Lecture will be held in 2026 in Tanzania, at Mkapa’s home village, as proposed by the family. He noted ongoing collaborations with Tanzanian institutions such as the University of Dodoma, highlighting the shared vision between the two countries.

Representing the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, James Ikwiya Magodo said the lecture serves as a powerful reminder to integrate Mkapa’s principles of service, integrity, and democratic governance into today’s leadership practices.

The event drew several dignitaries, including the Ambassador of Tanzania to Uganda, H.E. (Rtd) Maj. Gen. Paul Kisesa Simuli , Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, clan leaders, Dr. Jude Kagoro from the university of Bremen Germany as the keynote speaker, and other regional figures.

Cavendish University’s continued dedication to the memorial lecture underscores its role in shaping dialogue on governance and nurturing the next generation of East African leaders inspired by Mkapa’s legacy.
