Iganga Hosts President Museveni as He Calls for Wider Adoption of Government Wealth Programmes
Speaking with characteristic reflection, Museveni reminded the gathering of the region’s long journey from insecurity to stability. He recounted moments from the early 1970s when Iganga was still a small and tense town during the liberation struggle.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni intensified his campaign message in Iganga District, urging residents to fully embrace government wealth-creation programmes as the surest path to household prosperity. The stop in Iganga formed part of his wider Busoga campaign trail and drew large crowds eager to hear the NRM candidate’s vision for the next phase of Uganda’s development.
Speaking with characteristic reflection, Museveni reminded the gathering of the region’s long journey from insecurity to stability. He recounted moments from the early 1970s when Iganga was still a small and tense town during the liberation struggle.
“In 1971–72, Iganga was a small town where I even hid 12 guns during the struggle. Today, we celebrate peace,” he said, thanking God for the transformation and emphasising that peace remains the bedrock upon which development rests.
The President centred his address on the importance of wealth creation at household level—an agenda he has carried throughout the campaign. He challenged residents not to ignore government programmes designed to elevate communities from subsistence livelihoods.
Museveni pointed to the successes already registered in Iganga and other districts, where many families have used the Four-Acre Model, the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and Youth/Women funds to boost their incomes.
“These initiatives are working. Many families have moved out of poverty because they took advantage of these programmes. Let everyone join this journey,” he said.
He urged the public to adopt modern agricultural practices, diversify production and use government financing channels to grow small enterprises into sustainable ventures.
The President also reaffirmed government commitment to maintaining free universal education, noting that educating every Ugandan child remains central to national transformation. He added that while significant strides have been made, more work will continue to enhance learning conditions in all public schools.
Infrastructure featured prominently in his message as well. Museveni pledged improvements to key transport routes within Busoga, including the long-awaited tarmacking of the Iganga–Bulopa–Kamuli road. He said the upgrade would strengthen trade, ease travel and enhance access to essential services.
Additionally, he confirmed the government’s intention to expand the availability of safe water and electricity across both rural and urban communities in Iganga, aligning with the NRM’s long-standing development commitments.
Throughout his address, President Museveni maintained that the National Resistance Movement remains the only political force with the capacity to safeguard Uganda’s peace and steer economic transformation.
“Only the NRM has the capacity to transform Uganda. I ask for your support so we can protect the peace and create more prosperity,” he appealed.
He urged the people of Iganga to rally behind the ruling party to ensure continuity of the programmes that have, over time, shaped Uganda’s socio-economic progress.
The Busoga sub-region remains politically significant as Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections. Museveni’s engagements in Iganga continue his broader strategy of reinforcing NRM structures at the grassroots, promoting government initiatives and appealing directly to communities to take advantage of available development vehicles.
As he concluded his rally, the President affirmed that the next phase of Uganda’s growth depends on improved productivity, sustained peace and a population willing to utilise government programmes to build wealth.
