The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering modern, safe, and high-quality road infrastructure across the city, as part of the ongoing Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP).

On September 11, KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki met with officials from China Railway 18th Group, the lead contractor on several roadworks, to review progress and set clear timelines for project completion. The meeting, held at City Hall, was attended by the company’s project managers led by Dong Limin.

Buzeki emphasized that the Authority’s priority extends beyond road construction to ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users. She specifically called for increased investment in pedestrian walkways, especially along Fifth Street, and stronger measures to manage dust and debris during construction.

“As KCCA, our priority is the safety and well-being of city residents. We expect contractors to not only build roads but also create safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Dust suppression and proper site clearance are non-negotiable,” Buzeki stated.

During the review, China Railway 18th Group reported notable progress on several key routes in Kampala’s Industrial Area, including Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Streets. The contractor committed to completing works on Eighth Street, Sir Apollo Kaggwa, and Muzito Road by December 2025.

Limin acknowledged challenges on Salaama Road due to the ongoing relocation of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) pipelines but assured KCCA that mitigation measures had been introduced. The company has now resorted to night works in order to accelerate progress.

“We are committed to working closely with KCCA to deliver quality roads on schedule. We are doubling efforts on Salaama and Kyebando. Safety and quality remain at the center of our work,” said Limin.

The Authority continues to provide close technical supervision through its Directorate of Engineering and Technical Services, led by Eng. Justus Akankwasa. He emphasized that KCRRP is one of the most ambitious and transformative infrastructure programs in Kampala’s history, targeting decongestion, improved drainage, and enhanced safety.

“Every road completed under KCRRP is a milestone in building a city that works for its people. KCCA will not relent in ensuring that contractors deliver results,” Akankwasa noted.

The Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project, funded through support from development partners, covers over 40 roads across different divisions of the capital. The initiative is not only improving the city’s transport network but also enhancing mobility, reducing traffic jams, and providing better conditions for businesses and pedestrians alike.

As works intensify, KCCA has reiterated that all contractors must adhere to strict quality standards and environmental management practices to ensure that Kampala’s transformation into a modern, livable city is achieved.

Meanwhile, KCCA received UGX 20 million from China Railway 18th Bureau Group Corporation Limited, joining this year’s Kampala City Festival on 5th October as Emerald Sponsors. According to the KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki, Kampala is our city, and we all share the responsibility to celebrate and build it.

KCCA invites more partners to join in making this festival a true reflection of our unity and pride!
