NRM Candidate President Museveni Courts Kanungu Voters with New Agriculture and Road Commitments
Addressing thousands of residents, the NRM presidential flag bearer announced that government will introduce a dedicated fund to help tea farmers access affordable fertilisers through their SACCOs.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged government support to boost tea production and improve key infrastructure in Kanungu District, reaffirming the National Resistance Movement’s commitment to wealth creation and rural transformation as he campaigned at Rwere Playground.
Addressing thousands of residents, the NRM presidential flag bearer announced that government will introduce a dedicated fund to help tea farmers access affordable fertilisers through their SACCOs. He explained that many growers, particularly those managing large estates, had raised concerns over the high cost of inputs which has increasingly threatened productivity.
“The government will establish a special fund to enable tea farmers get fertilisers at fair prices. They have told me the costs are too high, and we are going to support them through their SACCOs—just as we are doing for sugarcane growers and fishermen,” President Museveni said. He emphasised that tea remains the economic backbone of Kanungu and encouraged smallholder farmers to adopt the four-acre model as a reliable path to household prosperity.
The President also used the rally to remind residents of the fundamental achievements of the NRM, highlighting peace as the most important of the seven core contributions of the Movement. He noted that communities living near the DR Congo border understand the value of security more than most, given the region’s history of cross-border instability.
“Uganda has secured its peace without relying on external forces because we prioritize what matters in defence. With peace, everything else becomes possible,” he said, underscoring how stability has enabled government to expand infrastructure, strengthen service delivery, and support local enterprise.
On infrastructure, the President reaffirmed government’s commitment to upgrading key roads in the district. He announced plans to work on the 149-kilometre road stretch running from Hamurwa to Kerere, Kanungu, Butogota, Hamayanza, Ifasha, and Ikunza—an upgrade he said will facilitate trade, improve mobility, and strengthen Kanungu’s linkages to neighbouring districts and border points.
President Museveni told supporters that the NRM government has already transformed Uganda’s road network nationwide, and more developments are planned to support agriculture, tourism, and other productive sectors in the Kigezi sub-region.
As the campaigns continue, the President reiterated that the NRM’s focus remains wealth creation and socio-economic transformation, encouraging the people of Kanungu to take advantage of government programs to improve their livelihoods.
