At exactly 8:45 a.m., the NRM flag bearer in the Kalangala District Woman MP race, Idah Nabayiga, turned up at Kibanga Church of Uganda polling station and cast her ballot. In her address to the media shortly after, Nabayiga expressed confidence she would win by 80%.

KALANGALA, Uganda — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has reclaimed the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat after its candidate, Idah Nabayiga, emerged victorious in the by-election held on June 24, 2026.

According to official results announced by Kalangala District Returning Officer Ronald Agaba at 1:53 am this morning, Nabayiga secured 12,642 votes, defeating her closest challenger, Irene Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who garnered 7,474 votes.

Three independent candidates also contested the race. Sharifah Babirye received 244 votes, Hellen Flavia Nagawa obtained 217 votes, while Agness Nasuuna polled 34 votes.

The declaration of results marked the end of a closely contested campaign that attracted significant political attention, with five candidates vying for the parliamentary seat left vacant following the death of former Woman MP Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away in April this year.

A Return to Parliament

Nabayiga is no stranger to Uganda's legislative politics. Born on November 14, 1979, she previously served as the Woman Representative for Kalangala District in Uganda's 10th Parliament after winning the seat on the NRM ticket during the 2016 General Elections.

Her victory in the by-election signals a political comeback and reinforces the ruling party's influence in the island district, which occupies a strategic position on Lake Victoria.

Throughout the campaign period, Nabayiga emphasized continuity in service delivery, women's empowerment, youth development, and addressing the unique challenges faced by island communities, including transport, healthcare access, education, and fisheries management.

Emotional Contest Following Nakimuli's Death

The by-election carried emotional significance for many residents, as it was conducted to replace the late Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, whose death created a vacancy in Parliament and prompted the Electoral Commission to organize fresh elections.

Adding a personal dimension to the race was the participation of Irene Nampala, Nakimuli's sister, who contested under the NUP banner. Nampala sought to continue her sister's legacy and mounted a spirited campaign across the district's numerous islands.

Despite Nampala's efforts, voters ultimately handed Nabayiga a decisive mandate, giving her a lead of more than 5,000 votes over her nearest rival.

Electoral Commission Commends Peaceful Process

The Electoral Commission successfully conducted the voting and tallying exercise across the district, with election officials overseeing polling activities in the geographically challenging island constituency.

The peaceful conclusion of the exercise was welcomed by political stakeholders and residents alike, highlighting the commitment of voters to democratic participation despite logistical challenges associated with conducting elections across multiple islands.

What the Victory Means

Nabayiga's election strengthens the NRM's representation in Parliament and restores the party's hold on the Kalangala Woman MP seat. Her return comes at a time when Parliament continues to play a central role in shaping policies affecting local government service delivery, economic development, and social transformation.

Political observers note that the outcome reflects continued support for the ruling party in Kalangala, while also demonstrating the growing competitiveness of opposition parties such as NUP in various parts of the country.

As she prepares to take the oath of office, Nabayiga is expected to focus on advocating for improved infrastructure, enhanced healthcare services, better education facilities, and economic opportunities for the people of Kalangala District.

Her victory now closes a significant chapter in the district's political landscape and opens a new one as residents look forward to renewed representation in Uganda's Parliament.
