President Museveni Lays Foundation Stone for Akii Bua Olympic Stadium Ahead of AFCON 2027

Lira City, Uganda –

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Maama Janet Museveni have officially launched the construction of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City, a significant milestone in Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

The event, held in the heart of Lango sub-region, marked the beginning of an ambitious sports infrastructure development plan aimed at ensuring Uganda is ready for the prestigious continental tournament. The stadium, named after Uganda’s legendary 400m hurdles gold medalist John Akii Bua, is expected to become a world-class sports facility, fostering talent development and international competitions.

During the ceremony, President Museveni addressed concerns raised by some critics about the government's commitment to sports. He emphasized that while sports have always been valued, national priorities such as security, economic stability, and food security had to be addressed first.

"People sometimes claim that this government is ineffective, that we often overlook the importance of sports. As both a sportsman and a footballer, I understand that focusing on sports was challenging during the country's rebuilding phase. This was especially true during times of unrest and food shortages (Cham), which left many people poor and hungry. We recognized the value of sports, but we had to progress step by step; after all, Kamu Kamu gwe muganda (one by one makes a bundle)," the President said.

His remarks underscored the government's phased approach to development, ensuring that sports now receive the necessary investment alongside other national priorities.

Akii Bua Stadium: A Key Pillar in AFCON 2027 to Hosting Plans

Uganda, along with Kenya and Tanzania, was awarded the hosting rights for AFCON 2027 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This historic win presents an opportunity for Uganda to boost its sports sector, attract international tourism, and improve local infrastructure.

The Akii Bua Olympic Stadium will be one of the key venues for the tournament, showcasing Uganda’s capability to host high-profile sporting events. The stadium is expected to meet international standards, featuring:

A state-of-the-art playing surface,

Modern spectator stands,

Training facilities,

Hospitality suites,

Adequate security and accessibility features.

Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, highlighted that this project aligns with Uganda’s broader vision of promoting sports as a tool for national development.

"This stadium will not only host AFCON matches but will also serve as a hub for nurturing talent, creating opportunities for young athletes, and boosting economic activity in the region," she said.

Hosting AFCON 2027 is expected to have far-reaching economic benefits for Uganda, including job creation in construction, hospitality, and transport sectors. The influx of international visitors will boost tourism, trade, and investment in the country.

Moreover, the tournament will inspire a new generation of athletes and position Uganda as a regional sports powerhouse. The Akii Bua Stadium, once completed, will be a lasting legacy, benefiting not only football but also athletics and other sports disciplines.

With the foundation stone now laid, the government is expected to accelerate construction efforts to ensure the stadium is completed ahead of the tournament. Other planned infrastructure projects, including upgrades to Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) and improvements in transport networks, will be key in ensuring a successful AFCON 2027.

Uganda’s partnership with Kenya and Tanzania in hosting AFCON 2027 reflects the strength of East African unity and the potential for regional collaboration in sports. As the country gears up for this historic event, the construction of Akii Bua Olympic Stadium stands as a testament to Uganda’s commitment to sports excellence and development.

This marks a new chapter for Ugandan sports, with the government and stakeholders working together to ensure that AFCON 2027 leaves a lasting legacy. With President Museveni’s leadership and the support of various partners, Uganda is well on its way to making history as a proud host of Africa’s biggest football tournament.
