UBOS Sets to Commemorate Africa Day of Statistics with Series of Activities Including Blood Donation.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics has launched a one week series of engagements as it joins the rest of the African countries to commemorate the Africa day of statistics marked every 18th of November.

UBOS Sets to Commemorate Africa Day of Statistics with Series of Activities Including Blood Donation.

The Africa Day of Statistics was established in the year 1990 , during a meeting held in Morocco by a team of the then responsible Ministers. They agreed that there should be a day to recognize the art of statistics and it's personification to the development of a nation, Mr. Didacus Okoth, Principal Public Relations UBOS, said Friday during a media breakfast meeting.

The various numbers of national statistics offices found in every country since then started to celebrate the day. Most countries celebrate the day only once but for UBOS, it was found important to continuously leverage on the practice of application of data and also bring together various stakeholders to engage them, he noted further in kampala.

Okoth, highlighted the theme for this year's Africa statistics day as, “Supporting Education by Modernizing Production of Fit for Purpose Statistics,” with focus on enhancing the education sector and how data is critical in generating development and policies critical for enhancing the education sector.

To pinpoint the celebrations , besides a Friday Healthy camp with blood donation and centers at the UBOS Headquarters, City Square, Owino market and Nakawa market. He added that other activities shall include the high level engagement, staff skills development, the Geo information system day, the Gender Statistics Forum, national statistics conference and the student's symposium at Nkozi University.

Other partners present during the launch included the Uganda Police Force represented by the ASP Mr. Luke Owoyesigire, the Uganda Prisons represented by Senior Commissioner Mr. Frank Baine who is also the Spokesperson of the institution, the representative from the Uganda Media Center and the Government Communicators Forum Uganda (GCOFUG)

 

The Senior Commissioner and the Spokesperson of Uganda Prisons Mr. Frank Baine emphasized the beauty of statistics in day-to-day operations, urging journalists and government communicators to pick interest in Statistics because the truth lies in the details and the message becomes richer than passing just a message.

He also explained the core principles of communication in the public sector which includes transparency, clarity, empathy, consistency, and adaptability. Expressing his potential to manage crisis communication.
