Day Three of NRM Leaders’ Retreat Focuses on Discipline, Unity, and Personal Leadership

The ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders’ retreat at the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi has entered its third day, with a renewed emphasis on strengthening cohesion within the ruling party and sharpening the effectiveness of its legislators.

The day’s proceedings have attracted high-level participation, including the Vice President, H.E. Jessica Alupo, who is already in attendance alongside senior party officials and Members of Parliament. Her presence underscores the importance the party attaches to the retreat as a strategic platform for aligning its leadership ahead of critical national and parliamentary engagements.

Deepening Understanding of Legislative Roles

Central to Day Three’s agenda is enhancing legislators’ understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Facilitators are guiding Members of Parliament through discussions aimed at reinforcing their constitutional mandate, legislative duties, and accountability to the electorate.

The sessions are expected to equip MPs with practical insights on how to effectively represent their constituencies while advancing the broader objectives of the NRM government.

Unity and Discipline Take Centre Stage

A significant portion of the day is dedicated to fostering unity within the NRM parliamentary caucus. Leaders are engaging in candid discussions on maintaining party cohesion, particularly in the face of internal disagreements and political competition.

Key topics include the enforcement of discipline, the effectiveness of the party’s whipping system, and strategies to address challenges such as member attrition. The discussions are seen as crucial in ensuring that the caucus remains united on key legislative priorities and national issues.

Party officials are expected to stress the importance of collective responsibility and adherence to party positions, especially during parliamentary debates and decision-making processes.

Focus on Leadership Conduct and Personal Development

Beyond legislative matters, the retreat is also placing strong emphasis on personal development and leadership conduct. Sessions are addressing issues of parliamentary etiquette, decorum, and professional behavior, aiming to uphold the dignity and integrity of Parliament.

Participants are also being taken through modules on personal management, including time management, emotional intelligence, and public engagement—skills considered essential for effective leadership in today’s dynamic political environment.

Financial Literacy and Responsible Leadership

Another key highlight of the day is financial literacy, with MPs receiving guidance on prudent financial management both at a personal and professional level. The training is intended to promote responsible leadership and reduce vulnerabilities that may arise from poor financial decisions.

Organizers believe that financially literate leaders are better positioned to serve with integrity and make sound policy decisions that positively impact national development.

Building Momentum for the Days Ahead

As the retreat progresses, the focus on discipline, unity, and personal growth is expected to lay a solid foundation for subsequent sessions. The outcomes of these discussions are likely to shape the conduct and performance of NRM legislators in Parliament and beyond.

With momentum building at Kyankwanzi, the retreat continues to serve as a critical forum for reflection, ideological alignment, and strategic planning within the NRM as it consolidates its leadership and governance agenda.
