Kabarole: Strong NUP Figure Kobugabe Lilian Withdraws from 2026 Woman MP Race

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has been dealt a major blow in Western Uganda following the unexpected withdrawal of Kobugabe Lilian, one of the region’s strongest opposition figures, from the 2026 Woman Member of Parliament race for Kabarole District.
In a letter dated October 15, 2025, addressed to the party’s Secretary General, Mr. Lewis Lubongoya, Kobugabe officially announced her decision to step down from the contest, describing it as a difficult but carefully considered choice.
“This decision, though difficult, has been reached after careful reflection. It is my humble request that the party utilize the remaining seven days before nomination to identify and support another candidate who can effectively represent our movement's aspirations in the 2026 General Elections,” she wrote.
Kobugabe, who has been a vocal critic of government excesses and a strong grassroots mobilizer, has built a significant following in Kabarole and surrounding districts. Her message of equality, accountability, and youth empowerment has resonated deeply with the region’s growing base of NUP supporters.
Political analysts are describing her withdrawal as a “strategic loss for NUP,” given her growing influence and popularity in an area long considered a ruling party stronghold.
Despite stepping down, Kobugabe reaffirmed her unwavering loyalty to NUP and commitment to the struggle for a free and fair Uganda, pledging to continue supporting the party’s activities and candidates across the region.
Her exit now leaves NUP with only a few days to front a replacement, a move that could determine the party’s strength and visibility in Western Uganda ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
