KIU’s Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba Named African Educationist of the Year 2024

Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Kampala International University (KIU), has been named African Educationist of the Year 2024 by the African Leadership Magazine. This prestigious award, part of the 14th Edition of the African Leadership Magazine Persons of the Year Awards, recognizes his outstanding contributions to higher education in Africa.
With 86.24% of the votes, Dr. Basajjabalaba’s leadership has positioned KIU as Uganda’s top private university and a leading institution on the continent. Founded in 2001, KIU is celebrating 25 years of academic excellence, expanding its presence across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda while offering programs tailored to the modern workforce.
A key achievement under his leadership is the Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) in Ishaka, Bushenyi District. With a 1,200-bed capacity, it serves as one of Uganda’s largest medical training facilities, advancing healthcare and medical education in East Africa.
Dr. Basajjabalaba was honoured at the African Persons of the Year Awards Ceremony 2024, on February 27th–28th, 2025, in Casablanca, Morocco.
The event, themed “Inclusive Leadership for an Interconnected Africa. New Paradigms for Future Realities”, will be chaired by H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania, alongside other distinguished leaders, including H.E. Andry Rajoelina (President of Madagascar), H.E. João Lourenço (President of Angola), and Uganda’s Prime Minister, H.E. Robinah Nabbanja.
