Kampala University is set to hold its 23rd Graduation Ceremony on Thursday April 23, 2026, in a landmark event that not only celebrates academic achievement but also commemorates 27 years of contribution to higher education, innovation, and national development.

In a message released ahead of the ceremony, the Founding Vice-Chancellor, Owek. Amb. Al-haj. Prof. Badru Dungu Kateregga , underscored the institution’s enduring commitment to academic excellence and its evolving role in shaping responsible, forward-thinking graduates in a rapidly changing digital world.

The ceremony, scheduled to take place at the university’s main campus in Ggaba, Kampala, will bring together graduands, families, education stakeholders, and distinguished guests to celebrate both individual success and institutional legacy. It will be presided over by Chancellor Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera , with Prof. Maggie Kigozi expected as the Chief Guest.

A Celebration of Achievement and Growth

This year’s graduation will see a total of 3,514 students awarded qualifications across various academic disciplines. Of these, 1,812 (51.6%) are female, reflecting the university’s continued efforts toward gender inclusion and equal opportunity in higher education.

The ceremony will also mark the 7th graduation of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences based at Mutundwe, where over 242 nurses are expected to graduate—further strengthening Uganda’s healthcare workforce.

Additionally, the university will recognize 12 alumni who were recently elected to the 12th Parliament, highlighting the institution’s growing influence in leadership and governance.

Embracing Innovation with Responsibility

Under the theme “Empowering a New Generation: AI, Innovation, and Sustainable Development,” Prof. Kateregga emphasized the transformative power of digital technology while cautioning against its misuse.

He urged young people, particularly graduands and digital platform users, to embrace innovation responsibly. According to him, while digital tools and artificial intelligence present vast opportunities for economic growth, research advancement, and creativity, they also carry risks when misused.

Prof. Kateregga called on youth to avoid using digital platforms to spread misinformation, harm others, or promote unethical content. Instead, he encouraged them to leverage these technologies to create jobs, solve societal challenges, and contribute meaningfully to both national and global development.

A Call for Responsible Digital Citizenship

Central to his message was the concept of responsible digital citizenship. He stressed that ethical use of technology is not only a personal obligation but a collective responsibility necessary for building a respectful and trustworthy digital society.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that as Uganda and the world increasingly rely on digital systems, the role of educated, ethical, and innovative young people becomes even more critical.

A Message to Graduands

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Kateregga congratulated the graduands on their academic achievements and encouraged them to uphold the values instilled in them during their studies.

He urged them to remain humble, act as worthy ambassadors of Kampala University, and strive to create a positive impact in their communities. He further emphasized the importance of continuous learning, integrity, and service to humanity as they transition into the next phase of their lives.

As Kampala University celebrates nearly three decades of academic excellence, the 23rd graduation ceremony stands as a testament to its resilience, growth, and relevance in shaping Uganda’s human capital. With a strong emphasis on innovation, ethical leadership, and societal impact, the institution continues to position itself as a key player in nurturing a generation capable of driving sustainable development in Uganda and beyond.
