LASPNET and Uganda Law Society Mobilise Nation for Access to Justice Run
On the sidelines of the Run, LASPNET will host a Legal Aid Open Day where Legal Aid Service Providers (LASPs) will offer free legal assistance, information, and advisory services to individuals facing land disputes, family matters, criminal issues, commercial conflicts, and other justice-related challenges.
The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET), in partnership with the Uganda Law Society (ULS), is set to host the first-ever Access to Justice (A2J) Run on 29th November 2025 at the Law Development Centre (LDC) Grounds in Makerere. The highly anticipated event, themed “Run4Justice,” aims to spotlight barriers to justice in Uganda, create widespread awareness on legal aid and pro bono services, and raise funds towards the construction of the much-needed Legal Aid House, which will strengthen LASPNET’s institutional operations and long-term sustainability.
The run will start at 6:00am, featuring 3km, 5km, and 10km categories open to the general public, legal professionals, civil society organisations, and corporate teams. Organisers expect at least 5,000 runners to participate in what they describe as a landmark event in Uganda’s justice sector calendar.
A Unified Movement for Justice
On the sidelines of the Run, LASPNET will host a Legal Aid Open Day where Legal Aid Service Providers (LASPs) will offer free legal assistance, information, and advisory services to individuals facing land disputes, family matters, criminal issues, commercial conflicts, and other justice-related challenges.
Simultaneously, the Uganda Law Society will coordinate a Sports and Fun Day for lawyers, promoting physical and mental wellness within the legal fraternity.
These combined activities reflect a holistic approach—bringing together public engagement, legal empowerment, wellness, and community-building under one umbrella.
The event will be graced by Owekitiibwa David F.K Mpanga, the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Lands and Properties, who will serve as the Chief Runner. He will represent Owekitiibwa Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro (Premier) of Buganda Kingdom.
He will run alongside prominent “front runners” drawn from:
Judiciary
Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP)
Uganda Police Force
Development partners
Corporate entities
Faith-based organisations
Civil society groups
The wide representation underscores the collective national responsibility in strengthening access to justice for all.
Why the A2J Run Matters
According to multiple studies by the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL Reports 2016, 2020 & 2024), 80% of Ugandans experience a legal problem at some point in their lives. The most common issues include:
Land disputes
Domestic violence
Family-related wrangles (marriage, inheritance, child custody)
Criminal justice needs
Commercial disputes
Despite the high need, many Ugandans lack adequate information, legal representation, or the means to navigate justice processes. The A2J Run is designed to shine a light on these bottlenecks while mobilizing resources to improve legal aid infrastructure and outreach.
Organisers have appealed to the general public, legal professionals, corporate partners, well-wishers, and all justice stakeholders to support and participate because “Justice matters for all of us in this country.”
